I think you mean 6th, not 4th. What might be confusing you is that you probably start of in 3rd, not 1st. Missing out 1st and 2nd altogether. Another thing that I have noticed is how much better the Fastrac will pull up a long hill if you put it into 4WD. Sometime we have a problem, particularly if pulling an empty trailer up hill at a "T" junction, losing traction. Why couldn't JCB used a diff between the front and rear axles like Land-rover do? This would have meant permanent 4WD using a diff lock to get even better traction when needed. It would also have meant even tyre ware between the front and rear axles. Another thing I tend to do, is use the clutch when changing the splitter up (never down) a gear at high speed in 4th, 5th and 6th gear. I hope that doing so will keep my 2155 going for much longer than exposing it to violent jerking to the transmission. By using the clutch you can also jump 2 splits, especially with that chip! I'm not a fan yet of the 4000 series with its's Vario transmission. When they have been about for 6 years without any transmission problems, I might change my mind. But I am very confident that my 2155 will last many years without problems. It needs to, because IMO, JCB should not have stopped building them. Enough sophistication without being way OTT! You cannot escape the fact that the most efficient way of transmitting engine power to the wheels is by gears. As soon as you put hydrostatics into the equation, you might gain driving pleasure, but you waste efficiency and will get serious trouble eventually. It might be great when it is new, but a serious bill will loom! I also like the original Perkins and later Cummins engines a lot too.
