We have just been through it having decided to keep my mother with 24/7 care at home. The stress on the rest of the family is immense both emotionally and financially. The thing that haunts me is that her mother had the same problem and her mother before that. I remember my Grandmother saying "If I ever become like my mother ,shoot me" and yet she herself spent fifteen years in nursing homes. .My mother told me that she too would not want to be a living corpse but it is exactly what she became for over five years. The trouble is that we all say we would rather be put down like a dog rather than go through all that, when we are relatively young and fit. But it creeps up on you insidiously. First there is perhaps a hospital trip for a new hip, a load of drugs then maybe a fall. Everything seems ok but you start to become self obsessed with your condition and the next doctor's visit, the next pill to take etc. The irony is that the less reason there is to continue living, as the mind starts to go the hold on life becomes stronger as the body goes into auto mode. What is the answer? Well we can all make a start by trying to stay as fit as possible with a sensible diet, weight and exercise (both physical and mental) which will do no harm, the rest is in the lap of the Gods
