We must assume that the question in your first line is a p!ss take, if not it speaks volumes for a misunderstanding of the situation; because of course it is about numbers! Principles matter, but in the real world having half a dozen immigrants - legal or not - is nigh on irrelevant, having tens of thousands of times as many, year in year out, is of very great importance. As for the remainder, something and nothing; vernacular use has already been covered. We have a very fair idea of how many illegal immigrants there are, do some homework and you might too... Seeking political asylum is legal and, as a Barrister, I do know that; I also know that making a false claim is illegal, note that - it's not 'unlawful', it is a criminal offence. But I'm intrigued: why do you think that having hundreds of thousands, leading to millions eventually, of self-selecting individuals come here from the third world is a good thing for this country; and does it matter to you that a every large majority of the population are against it? For the record; I have no problem with legal immigration, on the basis of people coming here to settle and bringing skills we need; nor do I have a problem with helping genuine asylum seekers, who come on the understanding that they will be given refuge until safe to return to their homes - as per the UN Convention. I don't want and am actively against mass immigration, with the sole exception of the people of Hong Kong, who I think have a legal and moral right to come here and remain.
