Good idea for a thread... I want a credible and effective Opposition for the sake of our democracy; but I'm not at all distressed that Labour as currently constituted is in trouble. It's a truism that government's first duty is to ensure the security of the state; Labour has people in Parliament who are actively and openly anti the UK as a state, both in its capacity as such in the world, and in in the way its people and society exist. There is no way that most people will consider voting for Labour while this is the case, and rightly so. Regardless of politics, the first thing any party must accept is 'the will of the people'. I don't agree that Parliament is sovereign - although I accept the legal status quo that it is - since the people are demonstrably sovereign. Nor do I accept that it is for Parliament, HMG or the PM to 'lead' the country; rather it is for them to be lead by the people and to implement the common will. It's no secret that I'm a supporter of PR - pure and simple, no 'versions' - and am also a supporter of the greater use of referenda in matters that are of fundamental importance to the country. The use of these give any government a definite aim and an absolute mandate for action in any given matter. No matter what Sir Keir has said about accepting Brexit, everyone knows it's just so much talk, he sneered and still sneers at those he looks down on for voting other than him. And Labour, as a whole, do the same to everyone on every issue with which there is any dissent from their line. Will Sir Keir be able to 'fix' Labour? Not a hope when he is a great part of the problem and is blind to / ignores the remainder of it. Labour is very effectively committing a slow electoral suicide by deriding and ignoring and insisting on 'converting' the very people upon whom it relied for generations. Oh dear, how sad, never mind. So that's Labour receipted and filed; where will we find effective opposition? The Liberals are equally judgmental and far more irrelevant; Plaid in Wales are unelectable; the SNP are a single-issue joke, with nothing that they can back up with real-world facts. So the Conservatives are in government by default. I'm a Tory party member, but the current situation doesn't please me - although I'll admit relief that Mr Corbyn isn't PM. We need a decent Opposition, we really, really need one, but I can't see any chance of it in the near to medium future. Andy Burnham...? a paper tiger (with too much mascara), Emily 'thicky' Thornberry, unthinkable... more lefties, not a hope. I Had some hopes for Lisa Nandy, but she just hasn't managed to keep her game up to the right level. I think there is only one Labour politician anyone's heard of who has the 'right stuff' in terms of intellect, strength of personality, personal integrity and electability to be a PM, and that's Dan Jarvis; but there is not much chance of his achieving it while Momentum are in place. But he's a former soldier, so 'ante omnia armari...' 😐
