I've always had Jersey bulls, and always have a ring in them, once they are of working age. As @Cowmansam says, if he's got you on the deck, having a ring to hang on to and twist is a damn sight better than nothing. The first big bull i had pull his ring out, was an oldish bull that i had imported from Jersey. He was used to being tethered, so I had him out on a Taylor bull tether . During a spell of hot weather I'd put him out at night, instead of in the daytime, as there wasn't any shade for him. One night he pulled his ring out and went off to see what mischief he could find. Unfortunately, my then in-laws were staying in their touring caravan in an adjacent orchard. Notice the use of the word "then " The old bull found a stack of corrugated tins to play with. ExFiL thought he was battering his car, so opened the curtains to look out the window. The bull saw him and went to have a scratch on the caravan instead. Anyway the commotion woke me up, so I let some cows out with the bull and got them all in together. Needless to say, things were pretty quiet over breakfast that morning, the occupants of the caravan hitched up and left and I am no longer married to their daughter!
