A Nationalised Rail Industry can work, but not while we have a discord between Industry and Unions. Sadly, the RMT has demonstrated what is possible when you have your employer by the bxxls, we now have RMT drivers earning double that of a Nurse, this is not sustainable. How can an employee earn more than those who are paying them (the taxpayer) the sums don't add up. ASLEF appear to be less Militant, however are happy to ride on the back of the RMT. People quote German and Dutch train services, however a driver in these Countries earns two thirds to half that of a driver in the UK. So, we now have a dysfunctional system, a mess up of Militant Unions, Private/Public Companies and a myriad of operators. All at a massive subsidised cost to the tax payer. It is clear that throwing tax payer money at a problem only makes it worse, not better. The NHS is now costing us £20,000,000 a minute 24/7/365 !!! As for the train operator profits, anyone who sells goods, and has a high value in transport knows, they need to provide a bond at the industry expectations. In other words, have the cash available to cover a catastrophic event. In addition to this, all other liabilities need to covered. So for all those hankering to strike for higher pay, (mainly the public sector) remember you were never meant to earn as much as those in the private sector, the trade off was a better pension and earlier retirement. And as we all know, higher public costs will simply drive inflation higher.
