What is the reason for your topping ? To cut thistles, nettles and rushes to make the field look nice, or to improve the quality of the grass in front of the animals ? I borrowed a major 8ft topper a few years ago, with the intention of buying one if I was pleased with it. I used to top with a very old Kuhn 5'6" disk mower with the top link wound right out so the mower sat on its arse, so if the mower hit a stone or mound of earth it would ride over it. I did half the field with the topper, and I did the other half with the disk mower, the topper running about 5"-6" high and the disk mower was cutting at 2"-3" high, the difference was amazing ! Within a couple of days the mown grass had sprouted up, with the grass motoring ahead of the topped half of the field, which was looking very miserable. You could still see the difference later on in the season . I have some wet parts of a few fields covered in rushes, I can only get on to them possibly once every 4-5 years after a very long dry spell, one year they were nearly 5' high and was having to cut in low box, as the mower wouldn't take the volume of the rushes at a higher speed, the mower does a fine job of cutting those as well. this winter i managed to get myself a jf 8ft mower conditioner for very little money, so hopefully the time taken for topping this year should be much less, just unsure whether to take the conditioner off, or just remove the conditioning doors ? I personly wouldn't bother to get topping skids for the mower, as you will get better regrowth cutting fairly tight to the ground.
