I’m hoping some of you can help me out. I’m erecting a 60 foot wide clear span shed, with one side coming down onto a slatted tank wall. When putting in the tank I was told I could use 6x6 columns (I presume quite heavy ones) as uprights, and therefore didn’t need to create piers on the outside of the tank (with the slats in place there is only 6” of concrete left to mount the uprights on.) This may well be true, but it sounds a little light. I don’t know what the intended steel would be for the span - maybe 12x6 H irons? Another shed maker that I spoke to rose an eyebrow at the thought of 6x6 columns being used for the uprights at 60’ span and suggested a 12x6 that is set side on to the tank. So my questions is as follows: has anyone had a shed put up recently with a 60’ span, and if so, what dimensions were the uprights? Additionally, has anyone mounted an upright on the side of a concrete tank that was broader than the mount and how was this done?
