Magnesium at T2 on wheat

My agronomist has recommended some.

Not knowing a great deal about foliar trace elements, having dismissed them as snake oil (except manganese on most crops esp light land & occasional boron on osr), I'm curious. The fields are ok(ish) for Mg, with SOYL maps showing indices around 1 on high pH chalk. The crop had sewage cake pre drilling so 38 kg/ha MgO applied so far.

Why use magnesium?
What form is best? Magflo liquid? Bittersaltz?
Any cautions e.g. avoid the sprayer driver aterwards 'cos he isn't going to like dissolving 25 kg bags in the hopper?

My soil mag levels are around the 900ppm. But I am still adding magnesium to my T1 and T2.

Soil levels not equal to plant levels.

Bittersaltz probably best if you can live with the huge number of bags. I use mag nitrate but know I really should use the saltz :**(

Would have thought sewage would have had plenty in it , we have used bittersaltz before and it is easily dissolved and will be putting on a couple of kilos on the ear

Ask if you can have it for free, but you will pay double if you can see a worthwhile response... and see what he says.

grass staggers? are K levels high? I think it helps disease resistance but HGCA think all micros are a waste of time! Like you I have seen mg and cu bring crops back from the brink. I think herbicides interfere with trace element uptake so that's my main justification to improve plant health

We put a liquid called Magistrate (i think its from Intercrop) on, i'm sure we'll be doing it again this time.
I read somewhere that the crop has a massive demand for Mg at booting

I use mag super 80 on all my wheat with my T2. More expensive than bittersalz but I do the spraying. My fields are lowish for Mg, but it does seem to help with grain fill.

I put bittersaltz on the barley and oats from now until t3. The wheat gets it from t1 - t3 so 6kg HA per year.

K levels are around index 2 in the soil. Staggers? I wasn't planning on grazing it!

Are you using it?

Thanks for all the comments everyone. No moisture stress here & the crop looks good, but I don't want to chuck the stuff around unnecessarily.

just thinking if the same applies to heavily fertilized cereals as grass, as its mg deficiency induced by elements out of kilter.....i use magnesium nitrate at T2. Big fan of EDTA copper too

+ 1 for super 80. Sub £1200 for an ibc, and FAR easier than bitersalz

Mine have always said it needs more mag. Hence it gets some. Has no link really to what is in the soil, or even if I have slopped 3 yrs worth of fibrophos on beforehand or whatever.

Buying group prefer Optemag IBC 80 g/l. What dose rate do you use please?

2 kg/ha Epsotop Bittersalz would give 16% MgO = 320g MgO. Equivalent dose in Super 80 is 4 litres.

Liquid Mg is around 56 pence per litre. Hardly going to break the bank, is it? Still less than 10% of the value of the fungicide going in with it!

I meant in general, not just on Mg.
Anyone tempted to shut the gate and cross your fingers!
