Second hand trucks

It seems my old pickup truck has become to costly to keep on the road, so I'm looking for a new one. I've got a budget of 3-4K but I'm struggling to find anything decent. Older low mileage trucks seem plagued with rust and newer trucks in my budget are all high mileage. I'm talking 07-08 reg trucks with 120-130k on them. Is this mileage anything to fear? I'm not looking for anything spectacular but the truck needs to be reliable as I'm contracting and a small break down can end up costing me big in lost time.

Or am I simply asking to much on my budget?

I had the same issue, in the end I decided it was just as economical to put the money into my old truck. I've got a 2005 Ranger with only 68k on it and to replace it with a newer one with similar milage I'd need to find £10k+ so I ploughed £2k into the mechanicals and structural welding and I'll get the bodywork sorted this summer for approx £1k so I'll still be in a better position than if I had brought a replacement.

I'd lean towards younger but higher miles, as long as it has been well maintained mileage isn't really an issue.

You might be really lucky and find one that doesn't have a towbar on it, one that's been for towing a caravan is generally a good buy as it'll do max of 100 miles a year towing....

My old L200 was valued at 3 to 4 k when i traded it in, it was 9 years old at the time, had done 100,000 miles, very reliable. Thats what i would go for, there are plenty around, you would get a 06 to 08 mk 4 for that money. Loads on ebay

How about one of the old shape Ford Rangers? Basically a badge engineered Mazda. We had one and although it wasn't the flashiest of vehicles it did what it said on the tin.

Try to stretch the budget to a mk3 or newer (56 plate ish onwards) as they have more powerful and economical engines.

That is what I have, has serious chassis rust issues (which I have had sorted) and is not economical but for a local run around work truck I'm keeping mine.
Had it remapped last month, now tows much better as they are underpowered compared to modern trucks.

Well I've just come back from seeing two rangers at the same place, one on 117k the other 120k, both 07, both seemed like they had done 100k more than the clock said. Those were priced at £4500.

All the trucks I see on eBay that I think would be suitable are a good 100 mile away. I wouldn't mind travelling that far for a decent truck but I don't have the time to go looking at heaps of rust that are nowhere near what they seem to be in the pictures.

That does sound good value. I don't seem to come across to many rangers with auto gearboxes. Would they be a lot better for towing?

watched a ranger go through thainstone a couple of weeks ago , 70000or 90000 miles I cant remember auto gearbox , £2900 should have bought as it looked good value .

That's about the right trade price for them, manual or auto for a ten year old common-rail one with decent body and chassis.
Much more is asked for them on the forecourt of course, but sales are open to anyone and plenty of traders will buy for you for £100 luck or so if you are nervous and don't want to carry cash.

Well folks it's been a very bad day. Went to the local auction, bought an 08 Isuzu with 90,000 on the clock, looked a very decent truck, even had mechanic to look at it, came with engineers report, drove fantastic until it warmed up. Stopped by local garage, mechanic there revved it up and it seized. I had put 20 miles on the clock! Tried the auctioneers just in case I could get something out of them but was obviously told 'sold as seen'. So now I'm looking for a reconditioned engine, anyone know where to look?

I rung them and was turned down flat! I know the risks of buying at auction but I thought there might at least offer something for such a big failure

If you bought on a debit card you may have limited comeback (ring the bank and ask about "charge back" in these circumstances), most of us don't use credit cards I know but if you have/did you could try to use the consumer credit act (I know this as I had problems with a new commercial fridge which the importers refused to deal with). Hope you get it sorted, you've hopefully had your bad luck for the next decade.......
