Companion Cropping

Sorry @Brisel I can't be any help RE clomazone effects on vetch or berseem clover. @Bryan@Albaugh might have some info as they sell Clomate. Thinking aloud, clomazone can be used on peas and beans and they are legumes. and bvetch erseem clover are both legumes. Doesn't always hold true that if an active doesn't control one member of a plant family it doesn't control any (otherwise I'd be using Atlantis in oats) but sometimes it does.
Hi, there is no data on the effects of Clomazone on Vetch or Berseem Clover, for what its worth i can tell you that Clomazone is ONLY a pre-em and does have a severe bleaching effect post-em. I would suggest Pendimethalin would be OK at arround 2.5lt (please check first) your seed supplier should have a list of products that can be used.

Sorry chemistry is not my strong point. Does it have to be vetch and Berseem? Why not use forage peas and still use clomazone?

It doesn't have to but I prefer lower dose rates as the extra hopper the CC is going through isn't very big so don't want to have to stop every 5 minutes to refill it. This is just an experiment on a 16 ha field. If it works out I'll do something better with the seed supply in future.

I have also been thinking about OSR/clover/vetch and pondering about how to manage the herbicides, and havent found a clear answer yet. Closest I have come to so far is the below.

"Herbicides commonly used in OSR are well tolerated by companion crops with the exception of clomazone, which should be avoided. Astrokerb (aminopyralid+ propyzamide) will take out berseem clover but at the time of use, late Nov/Dec, the clover is likely to die anyway".

I would use 7kg of buckwheat and 15 vetch or there about. In terms of N transfer it is still a little bit of a mystery. Don't get hung up on N when talking about CC there are many other benefits. One theory is hydrogen fertilisation. Most of the time you don't get a huge direct N benefit unless you kill or damage the legume. It is all very complex and not well understood.

What does pre em clomazone do to vetch or berseem clover? I am trying a field of companion crop with FSS Picto oilseed rape but have a cleaver and hedge mustard problem. I can do the cleavers with spring Galera but the hedge mustard is only killed in osr by clomazone, Clearfield or glyphosate.

@Andy Howard @richard hammond @Woodlander or any other agronomists who understand companion crops?
Clomazone kills Berseem Clover. Found out the hard way last year!

Quite a lot of osr herbicides are approved on winter linseed too like Crawler and metazachlor, but to be fair unless you have linseed in the rotation as a cash crop it shouldn't cause a major problem. Fluroxpyr (Starane) or CMPP knock it stone dead in cereals.

Was thinking what would be the issue if it didn't get killed, its hardly going to come out of the top of the rape and if it produces some seeds they will be catch crop before wheat! Not sure if they could gigger up eurasic oil levels tho!
