Mould board stays

If I lengthen the stays to push mould boards towards ploughed land make the furrow wider to run tyre in to avoid tyre running on part of last furrow. Got 520 tyres. Kv plough on number 8 boards at 14 inch

I thought it was pretty normal for people to use tyres that are too wide for the furrow size. If you're plough is cutting 356mm and your tyres are 520mm you'll struggle to make that much back by pushing the boards out. I'm sure someone whose more akin to modern ploughs will have a better answer than me...

Any idea how wide your furrow bottom is just now to give an idea of how much more room you need

By rough calculation and little real experience I would guess the maximum tyre width would be about 400mm or 16" before you ran into insurmountable problems. You would run out of flexibility before that.

having looked at many ploughs over the years, it seems that a 12" open furrow is pretty standard. You can push the boards out, but it makes the plough much harder to pull.

Would it be better to put different boards on, which boards would be best to use or would furrow wideners do the job. Here's a pic of the ploughing as it is set up at the moment

KV no28 boards would be an option! More suited for wide tyres

I have KV No28s on 16" furrows on the back of a Puma with 710s, no problems at all.

There are definitely some irregular voids in there and the work is broken. I think you are pushing it too far with 20" tyres if you are trying to produce nice work for match ploughing. The more you push the boards out the more friction you create and the more broken the furrow with the consequent creation of more pockets. I think that the cheap solution does not exist and you will have to bite the bullet and change the wheels/tyres.

The passage of soil over the mouldboard should be smooth and regular. If you push the boards out you will interrupt the flow and cause problems, very much like pattern boards with a high coefficient of friction or rusty boards with soil sticking to them

KV 28's will fit on your number 8 frogs, you will have to buy longer mould boards stays or lengthen your existing ones.

I don't agree that you can plough with number 28's and 710 tyres though, it all goes ok until trickier conditions are encoutered and then the 710's will pull the rear furrow back down and matching the next bout is impossible, 580's are about the limit for really good work with 28's

Thanks for that info Roy will look into that. Be cheaper than new wheels and tyres or new plough

I think Roy maybe right that 710s wouldn't be ideal in wet conditions but over the last 5-6 years I don't plough unless great conditions as I don't need to, do all my ploughing straight after the combine ish, press and leave till spring, had much better results this way. The 28 bodies either way are a great plough body, really good inversion.

Had thought about furrow wideners and run smaller front furrow. Anyone had experience with them.

I run furrow wideners. They are a long way from competition ploughing.

It all depends on what your perception of a good job is

saddles are standard KV number 8 fittings if that helps
