Following harrow for 750a

We've been using the standard JD straight tine harrows on our drill, but I'm not 100% happy with the job they do. They are quite handy where there's a lot of straw about and they can help cover in a bit when the slot doesn't close properly, but they can just as easily flick the grain out of the slot.

I think someone was talking about bent tines doing a better job. Any suggestions as to which ones to go for?

Original ones aren't much use, I've put on Kverneland TS ones, £97 from Spaldings for a set to do a 4m drill and they use the original clamps. You'll only need 35. The hardest bit is working out where to fit them, in the end I just dropped the drill into some old grass so I could see where the slots were. Huge improvement in covering over the slot with loose soil. Work fine in trash too.

Simon, did you get the 8mm or 10mm?

Just been out to check ( had to get a few more logs for the fire ) and they are 9.5mm, so I guess 10. If I could find thicker ones that fitted I would use them.

Have we got this right? Tines are shorter so Harrow bar sits 6” lower, I presume they sit under the bar as shown on left but are they the correct part as seem much shorter than original straight time on left. They are TS tines but may be they’ve changed in a couple of years? Thanks

The harrow bar does sit lower, clamp the tines on underneath the bar. I wouldn’t do the clamp nut up as tight as you have, if it starts to deform the washer it’s too tight. Move the pins that adjust the angle of the harrow bar so that the new tines sit flat on the ground from where the tine has it’s kink to the end.

I prefer the Claydon type which I think are longer seen here as fitted to my Horsch, I will fit same to JD when the type I fitted as shown by Robert wear out.
