Dairy farmers help me!!

One thing I can never understand with dairy is that when the milk price drops through global markets/over supply there is an outcry in the dairy industry (protests/blockades), but when the same happens in any other part of British agriculture we do nothing and just get on with it.

Suckler cow 500 gross margin if good.
Dairy cow 1200 if good.

Overheads would be a lot higher on dairy at 600 a cow leaving 600 net profit, Sucklers would probably be 250 leaving 250 net profit.

Read a couple pages of this thread, and makes me realise just how much fiction is involved in the advice on here!

I really hope the majority of advice here is ignored/gets an experienced reality check!

P.s. Something about Grass and it being Greener!!!!!!! You have been warned!

Is that not because advice has to be focused and the range between good and average is massive let alone good and poor.

I spent a bit of time reading the farm income figures for dairies. You can fairly easily work out the top ones are making 6 figures and probably as long as you like cows have a fairly nice life. The bottom ones are actually loosing nearly the same.

Your advice will depend a bit of where you are on that range and where you think boss farmer fits.

true, it just seems that the income from dairy once you get up to a decent number is better than anything else in AG
It is without doubt. But it is a hell of a tie, everyday, 365 days a year, breakdowns on a Sunday mornings when everywhere is closed to get it fixed, cows calving with milk fever on Friday nights when you've arranged to go out with friends, gold plated supermarket contracts that only the luckiest get offered. I wouldn't' go into it if I was in your shoes, I only do it because I have a big mortgage and nothing else in AG would pay it. I'll swop farms with you if you like lol

at those kind of figures youd be better employing an expert to run it even if it cost 40k
And thats where the problems lie, another dairy farmer who thinks employing an 'expert' will pave his fields with gold, you will need to employ good staff not experts. After reading the threads that you have started I feel that dairy farming is probably not the right progression for you and your farm business because if it takes this long for you to decide whether its for you or not, you'll be in a right pickle when snap decisions have be made whilst at the coal face as it were !!!!
