Great article in Daily Mail,seems the House Of Lords highlights the cruel suffering.Lord Gardiner says respect for religious practices .
Final sentence
“Lord Gardiner pointed out farm assurance schemes such as the Red Tractor and the RSPCA ethical food label required the stunning of animals before slaughter”
The man can’t have it both ways.
The article says in the last 6 years the numbers have doubled.
 
As I posted before , I bought some meat for the first time from the co-op recently . Very good it was too .I checked the EC number and found it was slaughtered and cut in Ellesmere -good !. I also noticed that it was Halal . :(:(

I’d be surprised if ABP is no stun Halal.

I’ve no issue with stunned Halal but traditional ritual slaughter should be banned.
 
I only know what i read on the packaging , and have no knowledge of whether ABP stun or don't . But what I do know is that there is an increasing number of abattoirs who do Halal , Reasonable from their point of view I suppose, in that the resultant meat is more widely acceptable , including ethnics . All our stock goes to Woodheads who don't, as far as I'm aware ,do non stun slaughter .

I have it from good authority in the latest edition of SAC sheep and beef notes that all lamb from a well-known lamb-exporting country is halal. They stun lambs and then allow them to regain some aspects of consciousness just prior to ritual slaughter.
I haven't named the country, in case it's not factually true. But if it is in fact true, I am not just surprised but ...................

I think there is a bit of confusion between "stun to kill" which actually stops the heart, killing the animal, and is thus not acceptable to some halal adherants; and "stun to recover" which is a head only electrical stun and means that the animal could potentially recover eventually, and so is not actually dead at the point of sticking. This is accepted as a good compromise by most reasonable people.

But there is, and that is why I have no problem with our lambs being killed stun to recover halal. I have seen it, and the lambs are killed at about 7 per minute; no time to wait for them to regain consciousness.
You will never make fundamentalists happy, but a large percentage of muslims are pragmatic about it, and they are good consumers of sheep.
 
There is some confusion on Halal - there are two types. My friend does halal poultry - it has a prayer said in the mind. Lots of poultry if halal in the Uk it means simply that its been blessed before slaughter. The slaughter is the same as every animal in the abattoir. This differs around the world. But in UK this is how its done,
