Looking good next week now. A good cold east wind can do a lot drying. Fingers crossed
Forced some on today. Tractor was muddy but fields travelled better than expected. Winter barley that had greened up a lot this last week anyway and a block of Sundance wheat that looked a bit rough. Think some of the barley really needed manganese more but reluctant to defrost sprayer with the forecast.
we were told in Ukraine they spread urea on the snow, as it melts the urea then is carried into the ground and since it is cold they are not worried about losses to the atmosphere by volatilisation!
obviously dont have to worry about GAC, NVZ, cross compliance etc.
Have our urea on w barley and wheat, things are greening up after a week, not sure if its the slight rise in temperature or the N.

Done nothing since 23/4 feb on any cereals, nor been able to travel on new seeds grass or grazing fields think we should try and get round the cereals again asap although the daffs havnt moved . This constant wet/cold is becoming a real threat to my usual good humour as im sure its affecting potential all round and im usually a cup half full kinda guy. Cereals are holding their own since earlierN but only just and every time I think we might get to go it rains again and we are ready to go within minutes. Most concerning now is we are only 7-8 weeks from usual 1st cut grass with poor growth. methinks I will not be forward selling grain straw or grass in any form any time soon

Looked back over the last 25 years there are plenty with no n on till late March even high yielding years

Fair enough but here the halfway point of wheat drilling was 21 oct this year......not long ago 20 oct was date by which drill was cleaned and back in shed.
We have to make up time and this cold march is not helping.
I think it could be a case that heavy land farmers might not be on spreading until April. Add that the soil looks cold, and a widespread use of urea and its going to take getting that N into the crops. Watching the week ahead, I think I can safely write off this next week. And then it could be proper wet again in 7 days time. Three passes on the winter cereals is almost certain to roll into two now.

We have a tradition of a bit of a drought always developing here under similar circumstances
Thinking 1975 - snow finally melted 16th April, then hardly any rain 'till harvest.

Very windy here so no chance at the moment
