Alternator woes

I put a new one on my Case 580g digger say 2 years ago, can't remember exactly, all was ok.
Anyway the engine side cover is missing and it never crossed my mind about water getting in and it stopped charging a month or so ago.
I took it to my local repair bit and they cleaned the corrosion out and said it was good to go, but it isn't charging the battery and is only outputing 6volts according to my meter.
I don't want to spend another £60, is there anything I can do to check inside the alternator?

Lucas alternator like this one?
Have you a working warning light as they wont start to charge without it?

The light wont go out even at a good fast tick over?

Ok its not charging.
Drive belt is ok and the pulley is actually turning the alternator shaft, sometimes the key falls out as the pulley is going on?
Large output wire should be connected to the positive terminal on the battery via the starter solenoid. Worth checking you have 6Volts on the big wire?

I take it you have the above Lucas alternator?
If you take the black plastic back off the alternator (7mm socket I think) you can take the brushes out to check them.
The 7mm socket has to fit down the hole you see in the plastic. The brushes are held in the plastic brush box by two 7mm headed bolts. Or take the complete box off the frame of the alternator, whichever is easiest. Just to have a look at the brushes for length and condition. Then you can move on to test the regulator.
This is what you see when you take the cover off .............

if its doing what you say it is then id be inclined to bring it back to the repair shop you had it at, inform them what its outputting and tell em to have another look at it, once is enough to pay to get it fixed not half fixed.
