Longevity of electric door operators/controls

Just had to order a replacement door controller as the existing one died unexpectedly, not quite before it’s fourth birthday. Mind this is a three-phase industrial/commercial unit not a home garage door opener.

No major fireworks or anything, it just tripped the main supply RCBO going to the shed - the internal fuse was still intact and replaced it to check but appears the power supplies sealed inside the unit have gone.

Rang the in country manufacturer reps this morning and they just shrugged their shoulders and mumbled something about possibility of electrical surge(s) from the mains damaging the power supply. Pretty common get out clause that one!

The door installers were a bit more sympathetic so have sent a replacement unit out at cost to arrive Friday. It’s just the hassle factor and the looming possibility that the other unit we have might fail soon too.

It’s well out of any sort of warranty, but not exactly a tinpot brand either - certainly would have expected it to last a bit more than four years.

Just crap luck or are these things getting more disposable by the day?

Fit a surge protector, but components don't seem to be as long lasting as they use to be.
Yes might have to bite the bullet on getting one fitted, but will be several hundred quid by the time its installed and no hard evidence that a surge event or events originally caused it to fail. The other identical unit seems to be unaffected, as does other stuff here with electronics in it. I'm inclined to put it down to crap components in their unit.

Hehe. I just got an email from instrotech, with the planned changes that are coming in the new 18th edition wiring regs, due out in July and enforceable from 1 January next year.

First of the changes listed....

Protection against overvoltages. New installations will have to have fitted surge protectors if overvoltage can affect human life, public services and cultural heritage or commercial / industrial activity, as well as in other situations where this kind of protection is deemed necessary.

We have a 3 phase operated roller shutter door with remote control which was installed over 10 years ago - occasionally we need to buy replacement remotes when we loose the odd one. That's the only problem ---------- So far... Famous last words.!

£180 for a new one...
