Self Built Central Tyre Inflation System

It seems most use an electric valve to open before the compressor starts inflating, so if the line gets whipped off the valve automatically closes leaving the tyre as it is, rather than flat. Also possibly a pressure sensor feedback. But does it not look delicate sitting out there.

Unless Pete would be open to connecting an air line from each back wheel while he loads up the trailer. Set the regulator to road pressure so it cuts out automatically. Quick coupling on both wheel and spreader chassis. Disconnect when the compressor stops (pressure reached if using the engine compressor) and away you go ...........
Then letting the tyres down accurately would be the only obstacle, maybe plug a digital gauge into the wheel quick coupling and open the tap?

Yes no easy answers ...........
Rechargeable compressor mounted in the wheel with remote control, but that just dreaming?
Especially for the volume of air involved ...............

Would it not be easier to mount a bottle/resevoir on the tractor and recharge it from a compressor when back at the yard?

Don’t think you’d have the required air volume with either of those solutions.

I’ve got one of those handheld rechargeable compressors in the boot of the car and that is pretty slow on a car tyre, hate to think how long you’d be waiting for a tractor tyre to fill up.

A bottle/reservoir would either need to be massive, or be under huge pressure. I don’t think a standard 7.5/10bar vessel would have enough puff for all 4 big tyres.

Think you’d burn a compressor out pretty quick too. They aren’t built for running for half an hour straight.

Thinking more of a diving type bottle 200 Bar!

This would be a good compromise I’d think you could connect up the air lines while you load the loadall on the trailer, have a pressure reg so it shuts off when up to pressure then disconnect and head to the next job, obviously this wouldn’t be any good if you had to load lime in a yard and travel to spread it you’d be going a lot of changing pressures then

:D
Do you often travel anywhere loaded? Or are you spreading mostly feild heaps and not needing to travel loaded at high speed?

Hardly ever travel on the road loaded but nearly always pull the trailer with the Loadall on.

The odd time I do take a load down the road it’s never far so can take it steady. Farm tracks and roads are a regular trek though.

I may be fussing over nothing (I do that!) and that’s why I’m not willing to pay £5000+ for a system. If I can do it for half that it might be a goer.

Do you want it push button in the cab or are you willing to compromise to keep it Cheap Simple and Durable?

No, I’m not after electronic stuff at all. As I see it, all I need is two pressure choices for field and road. A simple flick of a manual valve can do that. Pressure gauge could even be mounted outside the cab as long as it’s in view. There need be no preset options either. If the gauge is in view it could all just be switched to inflate or deflate.

The only thing it would need is a way to set a maximum and minimum pressure for the inevitable times you occasionally forget! Nobody wants a tyre bursting off the rim!

I saw an article about a farmer that made airtanks in the rims of his tractor. A big ass ball valve between the tank and the wheel and a pressuremeter on the wheel and you inflate the tyre in seconds. He just fitted a small airline to the tank to to keep it topped up, as the topping up doesn't need to go all that fast he could suffice with the airbrake compressor in stead of needing a a huge and expensive one.
