always thought beckett was awful.......gove made a good start but has a remarkable ability to nosedive and is rapidly approaching beckett IMO

She also had the full backing of Tony Blair, neither of which liked agriculture in the UK.

Never had any communications with Gove, but Margeret Becket would actually losten and responded to my letters and there is no doubt listened to a small group of us in discussions on the future of the payment system at the time. I think she listened as a small group we put a well argued alternative, in a series of letters arguing that historic producers who because of diversification had very small payments, would be seriously disadvantaged by proposals on the table.
Met Nick Brown the once, he was a seriously nice man who I am certain we could have done business with.

Another vote for Nick brown , the rest were just passing through , the last thing on any of the others minds were farming , more interested in listening to minority pressure groups and headlines

I was told Defra was formed to pander to Beckett’s ego, she was too vain to take on the lowly Maff, who’s Minister didn’t even have a cabinet seat so the departments were merged. Have no idea if it is true but was told it by a chap who was pretty well up the greasy pole in the EA at the time.

Both Gove and Beckett seem equally arrogant, vile and self serving to me. If you are looking for someone who entered the Houses of Parliament with honest intentions, you need to go back as far as Guy Faulkes.

Thats a bit iunfair on a fair few politicians who have made there intents blatantly obvious to all. Among them of course are Jeremy Corbyn and Jacob Rees Mogg to name but two.
Of course most of those most honest politicians are also some of those with the most odious intent

A friend of mine has done business in the past with Boris. He found that, behind the goofy, self-depricating exterior, he was very switched on indeed.

I met him a couple of times, and agree with you. He really was sympathetic towards farmers, and learnt his subject very quickly.
Circumstances were his downfall, followed by more important people sweeping in over his head to get advantage out of being seen to "sort out" foot and mouth.

At least Nick Brown was comfortable amonst farmers, remember when we demoed at a conference, he just appeared in the middle of us down on the beach with no support whatever

Corbyn made It perfectly clear he was campaigning on abolishing tuition fees then promptly u-turned once he hailed his election campaign a success, the same man who lives in Fulham and sent his children to a grammar school.

I may be idealistic but that just smacks of hypocracy and deception to me.
