New mart

Finally after what seems like forever we are going to get a new mart built at Darlington. Finance is sorted and they are hoping to get a start in 10/12 weeks time and moved in by 1st Nov 19. Will make a massive difference as the old place is not fit for purpose. Big sale yesterday and parking was a nightmare.

Will the wagons still have to park across the road I ask myself !

I think it will draw alot of trade from other nearby marts if it has better parking and facilities as it attracts more buyers.

Numbers were short in Longtown and I remember being sent to Thirsk once, years ago when it was near the race course, the manager a slim youngish chap, refused to let us buy even though the meat company I was buying for was and still is one of the largest in Europe!! They invited us back the following week but we never went and went to Darlington instead.

Waste of money, plenty of room at York or Thirsk

I've always thought the same, there's not much livestock that goes into the ring round those parts it was a busy place years ago mind.

There was even a abattoir nearby, John Flint I think the gentleman was called always puffing away on a pipe, lovely chap.

People said the same when Thirsk moved to its big new site, but Northallerton still shifts a lot more stock. Just depends where the buyers are, its all about personalities (yes I know its not logical)
I sell at Northallerton since Thirsk wouldn't stand behind a heifer they sold as 'in calf'. No major loss to their revenue but we've been better treated at Northallerton.

I visited about a dozen farms across Yorkshire and Durham at the weekend, from Doncaster to Sunderland, and nearly all of them used Darlington to sell fat cattle. I was quite surprised as it wasn't a market I've heard much about, plus the size of the area it drew from was huge. Might have to have a ride up some time.
I'm hoping to go to Malton next week for a herd reduction sale, will be interesting as it looks like one of the last proper old fashioned town centre markets from the pictures I've seen online.

What?,do you mean it was meant to be incalf? Its usually the other way round.I sold two Limx bulling heifers once that were incalf.I ended up buying them back, after paying keep, vets fees, haulage, and time. They both calved cracking Limx bull calves, and i still have the cows in the herd. The buyer only paid £590 for them, and wanted £200/head back.
