Methanol

Evening guys .
Does any one have a use for Methanol ?? ( bio fuel etc )
We bought a property and I have 8 drums un opened .
Would need collecting from mid Devon .

Yes we be interested in it who made it and what year is on it and have Barrels got seals on them

Add a bit to your fuel tanks.

It bonds with any water present in the tank and allows the engine to burn it

Sounds a good idea !!! I do have 8 drums of it though !!!!!!

It will not 100℅ as you can not buy it more than likely 99 ℅ or less

I don't think there is much of a reaction between methanol and water; most engines can run with a proportion of water in a mixture as they inhale vast quantities of it during normal running via the air.

I saw something on the ‘tube the other day that suggests BMW are running a water injection system in a production engine.

I always thought this was to cool the intake charge thus boosting power output, as opposed to the water becoming a 'fuel' as such?

Can the water act as a fuel though?

I thought the net effect was the same, cool/densify the charge (get more in) and also reduce the likelyhood of pre-ignition (pinging/pinking) at very high comp ratios, and aggressive ignition timing. Happy to be educated though by anyone playing with this stuff.

I’ve always thought it quite cool. Pardon the pun

That is old news Roll-Royce did this back in the 30 & 40's on there engines it is water Methanol mix to cool the super charger boost & it works well

Quite possibly. Don’t know of any other current production cars using water injection. Plenty on aftermarket / tuning etc but that’s something else.

They still do it on their jet engines. But Mother Nature usually provides the water injection

Water injection was I believe tried succesfully by German engineers in aircraft engines. The secret is that as fuel burns , waste heat is created which has to be lost by a radiator.
Adding water allows this heat to turn the water to steam, increasing the power to push the piston

Ford fitted a water injection kit to the Escort Cosworth, made by a company called “Aquamist”. When that kit was used for injection into the airflow they recommended using a 50:50 mix of water and methanol to both supercool the intake (increasing air density) and to add modest amount of additional ‘fuel’.
Edit: it is (as mentioned) also a great way to reduce detonation at higher boost, just as long as you don’t run out of coolant mix...

Ah I see, so the water is not just cooling and densifying the charge but turning the engine into a steam engine. Cool.

We have done a lot of work on water/ methanol injection & it takes very little to bring the inlet temp down , a lot depends on the fuel you are using , we run methanol as the main fuel & it takes a lot a heat to get it to burn right in the cylinders
