Network Rail elf n safety

Bought 5 loads of concrete sleepers direct from Network Rail last week. Haulier picked first load up Friday ok when we had sorted out that there admin had not sent release note to Crewe. Another lorry from same haulier goes this morning but won't let him in as he has not got orange high viz jacket and trousers. He had the yellow version but this was not good enough! They had an orange jacket they could led him but would still not let him in without orange trousers.
Haulier left unloaded in the end and wants to bill me £100 for his trouble which I can appreciate. I still need another 37 loads out so trying to stay calm!

try tomlinson in the green book, had 2 load off him from crewe and he'll know the job
The haulier I am using has a depot only 5 miles away and they do them as back loads at a very good rate.
They are a professional outfit, apparently they all wear lace up boots now as Rigger type boots are frowned up on in case something falls in the top of them, bit like wearing your wellies when welding.

Drivers need safety goggles at Birmingham too as well if you driver goes back.

Another tip - they put them on with that big forklift with long wood bearers the full width of the lorry bed - meaning you cant unload with a normal fork lift in one go......you may know and it's difficult to describe....... but ......using a normal farm forklift, lift 2 sleepers with the tip of the tines place them on top of the next 3 sleepers, place those on top of the others and then pick the lot up - that means you carry a full layer away in one go, fork lift at full 3 ton capacity and the bearers are removed in one go. And they are ready in forklift capacity piles with the original bearers back underneath, ready for taking out to field.

Its the quickest way of unloading. Took me 2000 sleepers to work that out which shows how dozy I must be.

You will be pissing about looking for extra bearers or end up tipping them in a huge heap and then only being able to get hold of 5 at a time

Takes some organising, just finished a 700m track and learned a lot

Power harrowed 4 times,
string line,
put sleepers alongside string line in correct amount,
use 13 ton digger to lift in place. (Its very good digger driver training).
tap down with bucket and get each one dead level and tight every time before you lay next one or it looks crap.
£7 delivered. was £5.50 last year. shortage of supply now.

Bit bloody cheeky asking you for 100 quid, its the hauliers job to pick them up and his responsibility to know what the sites requirements are. Did the first guy have orange gear or are they changing the rules as they go?
Either way can't see why its your problem.

Think the first guy had yellow gear. Network rail reckon they told him must have orange next time haulier transport manager supposed to have spoken to first driver to check for any special requirements and been told no problems! Someone is not telling the truth, I am just stuck in the middle. Don't want to fall out with haulier as don't think I would get rate any better and possibly more. Still need another 37 loads delivering before Christmas .
