Is it possible to register an existing quad for road use?

Is so how do you go about it and hat are the costs?

I assume lights have to be upgraded to meet requirements and a MOT is required?

What do you mean by road use?
You can register a quad as an agricultural vehicle and travel on the road under similar restrictions as a tractor (inc speed!) Lights/ indicators are not needed for this.
If you want to use it for other than agricultural use it needs to be a road legal bike with an mot. But this includes having a differential in the back axle which many ag bikes don't.
Think there's more to it than that but that's the basics.

Ah. Ok.

Forgot ag use. Doh!

Is there a max distance from home base?

Will have to have a look at the DVLA to see if I can find out the whys and wherefore.

Its not very far. 1.5 miles I think.
I'm not sure about quads. You can take a tractor as far as you like so why not a quad? I know there's a limit of something like 1.5 miles for 4x4's which are running on exempt (red diesel, no tax, no MOT) but I think quads would possibly be the same rules as a tractor (but don't take my word for it).

I doubt it, a tractor is a large vehicle that would be difficult and expensive to transport if it was not allowed to drive a reasonable distance on the road, whereas quad bike is compact enough to fit on a small trailer. Because the agricultural exemption allows for travelling without an MOT or tax I doubt you would be permitted travelling more than the short distance between land parcels.

1 bike we got had a road kit, seem to remember it needed a steel petrol tank, came with a horn, handlebar mounted mirror, brake lights/side lights and mud flaps.

Did buy a Honda 2nd hand and all that had was a number plate.:scratchhead:
