Tips for removing old harden gasket from aluminium

you chaps and chapess’ Are bound to know some tricks for removing old gaskets to get a nice clean mating surface, had to pull an oil pump from Ali block and the gasket is a real pig, the pump side is looking good, but the block side is a nightmare to get at and I’m struggling

You want a flat scraper with replaceable blades,mrs has one for cleaning the glass hob.
There sub £5 ? Look on ebay.

I use a new Stanley knife blade held at an angle and slice / shave it off

I've gone round the outside of gaskets with a flat ground on the edge of a chisel and given it a light tap with a hammer and quite a lot comes off in big sections. (Gasket, not housing, and it was on cast iron)

A soak with wd40 after slicing as much off as you can without gouging in.

Got one that holds a Stanley blade for £2.40 from wickes about to spray some WD and get on it!

The big mechanical hacksaw blades are as good as anything. Break in half, grind the teeth off then sharpen the end (without getting it hot)
Maybe wrap something round it for comfort

A piece of copper pipe with the end flattened and dressed square makes a good scraper which is kinder to the surfaces your scraping clean.

At 8” from a plastic petrol tank it would have solved the issue in a rather quicker timeframe than I needed.....

you have it off now but for what its worth i have a 40mm wide paint scraper of a good quality (old) that i keep sharp on a diamond block for that very job, it makes light work of it.
