Store cattle,

759 head penned up, sold to an off the clock trade, top was £1265 head, all feeding cattle would be UP between £100/150 head on 2 weeks ago and some sorts could well be up by £200 head on two weeks ago.

Stirks, 292 head penned up saw a trade of two halves, poor quality/ small dairy bred sorts a difficult trade and making similar money to last week but well bred suckler sorts were a serious trade and UP by £40/50 head on the week, top was £910 head.

STORE LAMBS SMASH THE £100 BARRIER TO HIT A TOP OF £101 HEAD!

Trade was red hot and well up on the week for store lambs, they say farmers never smile but today there were plenty of smiling store lamb vendors with prices far exceeding expectations, price of note is for the first spring lambs of the 2020 lambing season hitting nearly £60 head for two 15/20 kilo lambs..

And not to be outdone the cull ewes also saw a massive lift in trade..

Sell live to thrive :)

Better give it a miss next week then, seems to be a real yo-yo market! I thought the stores were a good trade but defintley not off the clock unless you were looking at a different clock to me. Stirks were also good, much improved on a month ago , especially for quality. Sucklers were a real mixed bag with very little of quality , reflected in the trade.

When was the last time you went to a store lamb sale...

I take lambs most weeks... if they’re making over £60 either the buyer has lost the bloody plot or they’re sending them to kill!

No money at all to be made from stores over £60 by the time you transport them back home, dip them for scab, they infect your breeding flock with scab so you have to then dip them also, a few die, your time to go check them every couple days, you invest in electric fencing kit, you plant stubble turnips, pay for winter keep, spend half your life electric fencing, a few energisers get pinched, your quad breaks down/needs a tank of fuel daily, you pen them up every Sunday to draft out the fit ones, your dog drops down dead, you have to put a creep feeder in and fill it up every other day because they’re not growing fast enough ...all that to take them back to market in spring and get £100 a life for them? Or even more comical £60 again for them because the price has gone tits up....

I stand by it anybody spending over £60 on “stores” ain’t actually taking them home as stores or they’re brain dead...

No money at all for the buyers on todays trade, most store cattle were making the value of what they will be worth in 3 months time unless the prime goes up 15/20 pence a kilo.

Was one hell of a store cattle trade!

No end of people are paying £70/75 for store lambs and turning them out to grazing!

You cant say that you cant pay over £60 head for a store lamb, if prime are making £80 then £60 store is enough but if prime lambs are making £100 then £80 for a store lamb isn't out of the way for example!

I would agree some people get carried away and leave them self no margin but also how the hell can a store lambs vendor survive if he sold all of his lambs for under £60...
horses for courses, some turn them round in a month and pay 65-80, others a couple of months and work to a bit less and others Lee them for 5 months!

if your market isnt making more than £60 for any well bred stores then I’m surprised there still surviving...
