Compared to a normal week about 15/20% of people at most.

Very noticeable how buyers when had bought what they wanted for today got their paperwork and left the market asap.

Only vendors who stayed to see their stock sold were ones buying ( ie say selling store cattle and buying stirks ) and even these were far and few between, also there were no buyers over 70 at the market either and most of us present like myself were also buying for other farmers that were staying away due to being over 70/ in the at risk group etc who would normally be at the market buying for themselves.

Far less farmers at Sedge today or Exeter yesterday than shoppers who would be in the local supermarket at any one time.

If they say markets had to be closed then they will also have to shut the supermarkets as there is far more people going to the latter at once compared to Sedge today.

Very clear by the comments from the dealers/ buyers today that If the markets are closed down they will not be able to source the stock they need to keep the country with supplies of beef/lamb/ milk products over the next few months.

Without livestock markets being allowed to operate like this week going forwards and provide the VITAL supply of beef cattle/ sheep/ and dairy cattle to the UK population then the UK will have a massive shortage of beef/lamb and milk products by the autumn that cannot be replaced by imports!

There is plenty of lamb around that is now very cheap, no end of pigs fit to kill that no one wants, the list goes on..

Its like a pack of cards falling down!

Are they still allowing NZ lamb to be imported?

Make your bloody mind up.

I have a feeling the likes of McDonald’s might know what’s coming better than any of us on here. Just the way they closed restaurants first then used up some stock on drive throughs then announced closing tonight. Seems too well prepared to me
Just seemed like commonsense decisions to me. I no for a fact that they smashed there expected takings for the day

Absolutely no demand from the ethnic trade tonight, when prices went up in the marts last week, the halal shops upped their meat prices accordingly.

However, the main supermarkets Asda etc left their prices the same, this led to a big campaign on Whatsapp and Facebook urging all customers to boycott independent asian shops and to use supermarkets instead, as they were seen to be acting in a fair manner and in the consumers best interests.

Many halal shops were named and shamed, some have simply stopped sell certain products until prices drop.

Surely the customers who were purchasing their meat out of the halal supermarkets wouldn’t be buying it out of Asda...

A couple of days ago you were saying the sheep trade would be very good due to lack of Numbers etc etc...now you reckon beefs going down as well...

Yep and it should be very good as well.

But the minute you lock vendors out the market the game is over.

And also confidence in the UK is really bad as no one knows what they are going to shut down next!

Certain supermarkets have halal counters. The customers can also compare supermarket lamb and beef prices with their halal shop prices, it's the same product.

The problem is supermarkets are on fixed price contracts or can absorb the losses, where as small butchers shop do not have these options and had to raise prices last week, which the consumers found unfair.

Make your bloody mind up.

The markets were still operating today.

The problem is that it was a closed sale with the vendors locked out so clear what was going to happen!

When I wrote what you have highlighted in red above I certainly wasn't expecting them to lock vendors out and Exeter were still telling farmers on Sat evening that they would be allowed to see their stock sold today!

And when those farmers turned up today they found out they were not allowed to stay to see their stock sold or even see them weighed!
