Oh come on! I'm only 29 and I can remember loads of times when stock has been a screaming trade, people get greedy and start waiting for them too get even dearer. Next thing one of the big players will import something cheaper and the bubble bursts. Then those who held on are crying the loudest. I don't know how long it will last but I'm thinking that come harvest things might alter. If barley shoots too £200/tonne again then £4/kg dw isn't going too be much use with stores the trade they are!
Not trying to talk the job down or be miserable, merely pointing out what happens time and time again.
Fair comment but the imported beef job got terrible press a few months ago and shoppers didnt buy it ,plus after December 31st it wont be allowed in perhaps. Trade deal with the US will not happen overnight and people are not going to touch it after hearing about the hormones etc, i expect school kids will end up being fed it. High grain prices or grain shortages could be a factor but low oil prices are keeping a lid on prices and making other feeds like maize gluten cheap. Biggest threat for beef prices other than us trying to find reasons for the firms to drop the price is the influx in dairy beef in 18-24mths time imo

I do hope you a right! It makes sense and is a logical train of thought.

But when has logical ever stuck in farming? ??

I've cashed all my stronger stores and bought extra sucklers so time will tell!

I think that’s the way I will be going if the trade allows. Sell stores younger and keep more cows. I probably will have to because I’ve already bought the cows.

Are you sure that's right? Don't they mean British not scotch?

No - it's a survey done by QMS, so looking specifically for the Scotch logo. It could be that the beef is from up here but non-FA or from south of Hadrian's wall, or indeed Scottish FA but that the assurance got messed by being killed or cut in southern factories (does/ can that happen?).

There is no ifs or buts of barley getting to £200 ,its not going to happen.
Straw is going to be dear though.

Probably should of sold strong stores and bought small grazing cattle but now the grass is growing again small store prices will improve further. Biggest threat to the beef trade is all these dairy calves which farms will be forced to rear but they will not be fit to kill until 2022 almost

But the dairy calves are being reared now, and have been reared for years.

The only extra calves I can see coming on the market will be the runty bull calves.

Do you sell then? That makes sense from a using all our grass making the most of cheap growth point but the anniversary sale in Dingwall is normally always a flyer..... This year who would know.
No. Up till now have calved all backend cows to saler and hereford bulls. Kept most of heifers for replacements in spring herd and finished rest as bulls.

We sell spring calves as stores about ten months old.

My feeling being a glass half empty kind of guy is that these high prices can't last and by selling them in September you might be able to take advantage of current price rise before they drop again.

As for the prime and store trade carrying on at current levels..

Both have gone up far too quick but will be okay for 2/3 months I feel but after that I wouldn't be so confident on either staying at current levels.

If you have strong stores to sell, get them tested and in the ring asap, this trade CANNOT be missed.
Ludlow Monday, shrews and b’north Tuesday, Drayton (and I think Oswestry) wednesday
And you have Bishops Castle on a Wednesday which would be @Timbo 's closest

I can’t understand why the unwanted calves can’t be taken an minced at under 40 days old.
