A cousin of mine has converted from beef to milk, has put in a parlour, and is now building his winter housing. He is going with cubicles and slats, having all ready built 2 huge concrete tanks. Out vet has told him he should be putting in deep bedding cubicles and not concrete and mats/mattresses, I've read a few threads on the matter, with a few concreting the beds and going mats or mattresses and not looking back. Is it something he should into or concrete the beds ?
anything with sand, makes you highly unpopular with contractors, but popular with repairers/salesmen.

He was thinking more of a mix of straw and lime. Once it's covered with slats getting anything that's settled out will be difficult.

How do you get out the gate with the correct mothers? And how many people to achieve this?
Calving paddock goes out in to the back yard surrounded by crash barrier so just shut it all up and let them follow me out. If some extras come out just sort them out in there. Easier to put a few back than chase one or two stubborn ones round the paddock

If get a really busy day with calvings especially if there’s a few heifers being heifers I’ll bring the whole lot in the yard before feeding and sort the calved in to the shed and others back out.
That's our go to now especially the 1st 25 days. Gather the calves up in the trailer and jot down mothers numbers, and through the parlour. Stress free!

Slats and straw is a no no. Even small bits of straw clog the gaps
If he puts straw in a slatted shed he will regret it. An auto scraper runs along the front of our calving pens and it sometimes pulls straw out onto the slats. It's a pain, and that's one 12 foot long piece. I'd go insane if it were the whole shed o_Oo_O

We bed the cubicles in our slatted shed with sawdust and lime and it pumps out fine.

Yip, quite a relief.

Anyone want to buy 100 cows?

I've got 150 head of beef roaming as well, I'm quite tempted to cash the lot in while they're in test and prices are high.

This thing has made testing groups of youngstock spread over multiple sites so much easier. I wish I'd bought one years ago when we were on 60day testing.

I think now wouldn't be a bad time to cash in on that lot 🤑
