Valtra v John Deere

Looking to swap my one tractor, what would be the approx diff between the active and direct?

Also, i know of a t series active for sale, any good or is it best to find an direct. main jobs would be feeder in winter, bale wrapper, tedding , topper, hedge cutting. I do really want a vario type of box and the direct would be quire close to that, feeding silage with feeder is to fast with my current tractor and hedge cutting also.
Valtra has 2 gearboxes, the direct "Vario" hydrostatic, and the "conventional" 4 range 5 powershift. This is in the active, and versu. Most if not all active/versu will also have a creeper box which will be slow enough for feeding silage.

Active has manual spool levers, and versu has electric. Like the direct, hydraulic and gearbox oils are separate.

The powershift gearbox has automatic shifting features that are well thought out, actually do work, and do improve ease off driving.

For what you've described as the workload, you want a direct though! Good luck finding what you're after, it took me over a year of looking to find a used direct that I could actually afford!

Well I have 7 valtras here giving far better service than jd tractors give , if I thought I could save money running JD tractors I would have them here , but I know several men who had valtra and over the years switched to the great green tractors , only then to switch back to valtra when they realised that the jd were costing them far more money to run. My valtra dealer has had more second hand Jd tractors in the yard in the last year than he had valtra . Big swing to these new valtras , over the years valtra were considered as not as comfortable as jd , but these new ranges has changed all that.

You've been promising this big swing for years. The fact is in the latest stats Valtra increased their unit sales by 48, to a total of 665. In the same time, John Deere increased their sales by 490, to a total of 4405. I don't think JD need to be worrying too much about the 'big swing' to Valtra just yet!

Is that the 2018 stats? Have they released the 2019 ones yet?

I looked for years for a second hand jd 6430 50k loader tractor. They were all either too dear or millions of hours on them or both. My mate bought one paid in the high 30’s for it at the time and it blew up not long after creating a five figure bill. You never know. I ended up with a Valtra n113 hitec 5 50k

I think a lot of the problem is farmers are keeping stuff longer as it’s so expensive, so anything tidy is often crazy money. Upside is if it’s clean you can often get more than you paid for it.

We haven’t got much recent gear here. Do you think it would be cheaper running newer gear then older stuff?

Second hand is grand if you can find good clean stuff that isn’t ex contractor. Just swapped an 06 rake for 7k for a new one as we do a bit of contracting around here with it, but you may save 3 or 4k going second hand but you never seem to get as much for the trade in Imo.

What did you go for?

It’s very simple if you want to save money buy the valtra , if you want less break downs , buy the valtra , if you want the best loader tractor buy valtra, if you want to burn less fuel buy the valtra , if you want a cab with more space and comfort in it buy the valtra , if you want a tractor with the best stabilisers on the lift arms buy the valtra , if you want a tractor with the best visibility buy the valtra , if you want a tractor that you never have to worry about the head gasket or injectors giving trouble buy the valtra , if you want the tractor with the lowest ownership cost buy the valtra , if you want the best tractor for power on the pto buy the valtra , if you want the best tractor for pulling up hills buy the valtra , if you want to have no regrets about which tractor you buy then buy the valtra . If for any reason you don’t want all the above then buy the JD. The choice is yours.

Good work! Can lock the thread now.

What about second hand valtra with loader and keep the deere too if you like it and have looked after it? Can’t have too many tractors.
No I want this JD gone and a fresh one...can’t afford to keep it as it’s still very valuable and need it to go towards the next one...would prefer to buy a new one as I know it’ll be well looked after and want the 0% finance
