Hey everyone, I am completing the research part for an MSc in Environmental Management with the Open University (Supervisor Dr Janet Cochrane). I am looking into the extent to which agroecological ideas cross over into mainstream agriculture and would like some perspectives of the UK agricultural community.

Done but I really don't know what you're going to get out of it. We get a few surveys on here and they are never worded in a way that will lead to some actual knowledge for the surveyor. They are always worded to try to get to a pre-conceived notion. I generally avoid doing them for that reason. I was obv in a good mood this morning.

How useful are alternative agricultural movements for the future of England’s agricultural industry and why?

I am pretty well educated and informed, but to be honest, I have no clue what you are talking about.

Done of those questions are going to be misinterpreted by some farmers, possibly even leading them to abandon the e survey.

I also think, we are too divorced from our food in the UK, we have lost whatever food culture we did have, this allows the supermarkets to drive the agenda. Their agenda (and multinational food/fertliser/agro chemical companies) is to increase profit, and damn the consequences (to the health of the soil, environment, human health).

We also suffer from "Disneyfication" of animals and emotional conservation, that prioritises individual animals above the whole eco system, for example badgers being protected (and spreading tb as well as hoovering up hedgehogs and ground nesting birds eggs).

Perfectly put, the problem with all these surveys is getting information like that to the student is impossible in a 2 minute tick box affair

There's confusion between 'UK' and 'England & Wales'. The survey switches between the two. Which does the survey relate to, they are entirely different places!

I find this comment extremely abusive as it generalises all farmers are unenvironmental in the first place.

"In your experience, do you think farmers are becoming more environmentally conscious? Yes/No"

As I went to sow a field today the hedges are lined with human rubbish. Plastic coffee cups, McDonalds, Cans of Beer, Captain Morgans bottles, plastic bags, baby walkers, building waste, old tyres ... this is miles long of detritus.

And somebody castigates me as being "Unenvironmental" FFS who are you trying to kid ?

Hey everyone, thank you so much for taking the time to complete my survey. My apologies for the countries mix-ups. The main part of my research relates to England and Wales, however I decided to consult community views from the whole of the UK, but failed to make this consistent in the questions, so my apologies for that and thanks for persevering!

It's been fascinating reading everyone's thoughts and comments and yes I am all too aware that I can't begin to understand the myriad of perspectives out there from this tick box exercise. Unfortunately lines have to be drawn to contain the research and most importantly choices made because of time, or lack of it, especially at Masters level and even more so while trying to home-school a 6 year old! This survey was particularly tickboxy for ease of collation though I included some space for comments as this is the most interesting part! It really takes ages to do anything with it all though. In an ideal world I would love to talk to all of you, ask more questions from your responses and really try to understand perspectives on a deeper level. If we're ever allowed in a pub again I can't wait to have conversations like that again! I don't want to say too much as I don't want to influence any further participants... but thank you for all your questions, comments and your time and sorry to anyone I upset!
