Silage / Straw / Hay Price Tracker

Yep but as above if I cost myself at the same price as for contracting then really its over pricing the job as I do make a quid or two from contracting,
So that hay was cheaper still :nailbiting: :nailbiting:

True, but don't forget you should be making profit at contractor rates. Bare that in mind when calculating profitability of an enterprise - if you've already made profit on providing the inputs, silage, straw, etc - that's adding to the overall profit of the enterprise.

Edit : H got there before me.
Should.
But don't forget that you could actually be doing something more profitable for your business rather than humping straw around or the fact you could have a breakdown and have to pay a contractor.
Oh by the way, I only costed this without a margin on the job so can you do it cheaper?

I don't know but I expect farmers buy in the row for their own personal reasons and costs it's down the list a fair bit
It can make straw dearer for others though if they get carried away same as winter bale auction s, after Stow auction in November most put their straw up £30ton , that's just an observation not a moan , I'm used to it

Farmers buy straw in swath because it’s a Second obsession after grass gambling

The farmers who seem to be driving trade so high this year at sales around here ( and certainly the one i posted prices on last night ) are farmers that have never bought standing straw before but have in the past always bought it off the lorry as and when they needed it.

So i guess having to pay £150 ton for it the past winter they have decided they wont be caught out again and instead will buy if off the field.

Ref costs for haulage etc for standing straw, you cannot run a tractor and trailer for less than £20 hour if you do it yourself and time soon racks up if you are going many miles hauling straw and do not forget it is not only the time on the road but loading and strapping down correctly.

Have to properly cost at contractor rates for baling and hauling otherwise your just a busy fool.
hauling straw used to be a long old job, took days to complete, now, a couple of hours, every 6 weeks, or so, doddle, nice chat, cup of tea, job done.
How much better, could those days of hauling straw, be more profitable, spent doing/or not doing, other work at home.

...and hauling straw home is part of my farming life....just like worming cattle or foot rotting sheep ......I could easily say "I will get a contractor to do that so I could be doing something else on the farm "
Where do you draw the line between doing it yourself and paying a contractor ?

It's easier to find a contractor than someone to worm cattle etc.

But then I've seen contractors hauling bales 14 at a time.
Now that becomes expensive when they charging £35/hr with a 2 hour round trip!
Adds £25/t.

Have to look at each individual job at the time tbh

Well looks like agrilink family members involved in baling straw this summer over the country advertising £20-25 a bale , they bale it too , someone know any more ?
Afternoon, just to clarify this is nothing to do with Agri-Linc Ltd, Lincolnshire or the Whyles family members. We have no involvement with any contracting or the sale of hay and straw ourselves.

Don't worry I know how to price my time but I don't strap the bales down
