Cool. What a special area that is where you reside. It has been about 10 years since I last saw or communicated with Bruce and Denise. Life got in the way. One of my favorite spots in the world.
Yeah, it's a great part of the world, especially over the past year or two, it seems like a lot of the world's problems tend to stop at Tunnel Hill 🙂
Since you know where they are -

- the far horizon is their hill block.
Only the dairy farm between us and the river, and only the river between the dairy and the McGill's.

Ben has bought a farm at Tahakopa (ironically @holwellcourtfarm was looking at that one) which completes their block down there quite nicely, instead of it having a hole in the middle.

Beautiful. Makes me want to pack a bag and come down. Oh wait. There is Covid and one of my pups has kennel cough. See, there it is, Life. Just can't escaped it. Never met Ben, he was playing in Queenstown. I did meet Cara and all of her horses. Wish them well for me next time you bump into them.

That block looked very attractive until Jacinda squeezed into power.......

Think the lane the cattle are grazing now has got more than enough recovery time.
Im making them work hard atm to grow some quality regrowth, dung a bit to solid but they are very content.

Last pic is the residual, think it's about right, last lane grazed is greening up.

This was my sacrifice field in late winter and gave it a rest late april and may and it just went from good lamb grass to silage/hay very quickly.
Father came over last weekend and i took him to see the cattle, i wasn't shure what he'd say about grazing such mature grass, to my suprise he thought i was right to graze it rather than make silage/ hay.
I have made all of 24 bales of good quality silage as plan B for winter, and get some aftermath.
What i could have done with as talked about before is a large herd of cows for a week or two in june to top the grass.

Busy day here today, had a shuffle- about with some animals.
Merv took his cows & calves home (been here the alotted 8 weeks) so we ran that mob into the shelter and sorted them out.

One of the neighbours heifers blew in in the storm the other night, so we got our cows in and cut her out, gave her a ride back to the neighbour.

Then I put up some "armstrong techno" in one of the paddocks and put our bunch out there, and shoved the 2 bulls and 2 bull calves out of the way up the back.

And, entertained a mate who just happened to show up.

And, had another inch of rain in the meantime. Really chucking it down again, and blowing up a storm. Roll on springtime!

Went to move the cows and we have one with a bad foot. Pretty standard, she was in the farthest paddock from the pen.
So the discussion ensued, when can we move her, how are we doing it... Could we get her behind a gate rather than walk her up the road...
At this point I said no, she's going in the pen and we are using the crush so that we are all safe and she will just have to bear it a little longer.
Hour later and she's in the pen, pain killer applied and Dad's just applying some spray to a cut on her foot. Then BANG she kicks hard at the back gate on the crush, fastest I've ever seen anything move.
After the normal comments about needing a change of underpants my brother commented that that is the reason that I had said she needed putting in the crush in the first place. Very true.

These cows are the most docile you will get, even the vet can walk amongst them without any fuss. Just shows that you can't take anything for granted when working with stock.

we forget that they are 'domesticated' wild animals, the sense of danger, is still there, we were given a book on 'cow signals', about how cows react to movement, by predators, us. Must admit that l thought it was a load of ballcocks, till l actually thought about it. Definitely wouldn't have bought the book, and most of what was written, we would call, good stockman ship, and we do without thinking, but the oh so real fact, if he/she doesn't know you are there, nature takes over, and as you say, wham bang.
It's the same with cows and calves, walkers with dogs, trouble is waiting to happen, cow doesn't know walker or dog, hormones gone mad, and could end up very nastily. In the case of cows/calves, not at all sure what the answer is, especially with the public wandering everywhere, there is no way of zero risk, and blame will fall on us, when there is nothing we can do, to stop inborn instinct.
