Sorry been at other things last night.
Anyway the thread alluded to Owen Patterson, (clue was in the title) as opposed to others(and to be fair there are a few on others)
Yes it is not all Tories but they do seem, how to put it, more engaged in self enrichment from their position in Parliament.
What is more those MPs of all parties are not only engaged in behaviour gain for themselves, but that of their parties (Bobby Jenrick) and not necessarily for cash but power and status( Priti Patel).
The erosion of the standards as they are present for members leads to significantly less trust and belief in a parliamentary system.
Does it lead to more corruption? again arguably yes.
Perhaps a civil servant will want his hand greased.
And then the policeman will want his hand greased.
And then the teacher will want his hand greased.
And then the roadman will want his hand greased.
Then the contractor will want his hand greased.
Insidious corruption is not attractive.
The issue is that greedy people won’t stop being greedy, and successful people rarely get to where they are by being nice.
Patterson has been an MP long enough to know the rules. I haven’t read enough into this but if he has broken the rules he should be sacked. The rules are black and white

I don't remotely believe you are stupid, so assume you are just trying to wind me up. If I take a contract to work in China next week for a period of years, I don't become a Chinese citizen when I step off the plane. I just remain a British citizen working in China, but subject to their rules and regulations. It's not complex! :)
Doesn't explain why your referring to the UK and us over here as 'you' though, does it...? 😐

Completely agree that taking cash for favours is rife, it has always been the case, personally I think it's probably been slower in parliament than in other areas( not that that excuses it in any way) either that or it was hidden better of course the current focus is on the Tories as they are in power, when labour get back in it will turn to them, I remember plenty of cases during the blair years.
To be fair to Blair he did sack Mandelson. Well Alistair Campbell told him to.

Isn't Johnson himself being investigated by the standards commissioner for dodgy payments. A case of get rid of them before their judgment is given?

And Moggy has done a U Turn already on the new committee... Says there was confusion during the vote between the specific case and the general argument for reform. Considering that when he was supposed to move the motion to suspend the guy, he only spoke about the reforms (there was a point of order asking whether the motion had even been moved), it strikes me that he only has himself to blame there.

I guess the big question is what happens to corrupt old Paterson. He claims he did nothing wrong, while everyone but his mates feel that you shouldn't need to be paid £100k to alert people to safety concerns. Wonder if they are just hoping it will go away.

There is a good argument for reform, but it should not reply retroactively, and it should not have been brought just because one of their mates got done. If they had cared, they had 11 years to make these changes.

How many times did he get sacked and reappointed, in the end to europe, and of course cash for peerages, it's a cesspit as are many public areas such as planning and contracts. Punishment needs to be far greater. Perhaps Paterson needs making an example of

Apparently Paterson only found out about the U turn after being called by a journalist while in a supermarket. Feels like he is being used to set the ground work up for a challenge against the investigator and committee of the investigation against Johnson finds he’s been a naughty boy.

I expect the same people who supported this will be claiming that yesterday’s events resulted in a biased investigation against Johnson.

Been another peculiar 24 hours in Westminster.
Mr P must have gone to bed last night feeling his fellow grandees had thrown him a lifeline, only to have the lifeboat recalled today.
I almost feel for the man.

Must also look up U turn in the dictionary..
