All of these schemes are more about providing employment for the civil servants that administer those schemes, that’s why the process is always more complicated than it needs to be. The process is more important than the product in the mindset of the designers.
@Janet Hughes Defra What is the total budget for this scheme and how much of that total is spent on administration?

The whole idea of this new form of grant scheme, with standard pricing, is to reduce the complication and admin cost. I fail to see how it could be made much simpler, or admin cost could be reduced much. :scratchhead:

Morning all :) I'm back online, just working through your questions with my team, will come back to you shortly....
Morning. Thankyou for being in here to answer questions. Would you be able to advise if the grass harrow (which to me looks the same as the comb weeders) would be eligible on this grant.
Grass harrow - https://www.brownsagricultural.co.uk/products/grassmaster

Comb weeder - https://products.opico.co.uk/opico-products/mechanical-weeding/comb-harrow/

The only difference seems to be in the name.

Thanks.

It would be if these people were spending their own money in the way that those of us running our own businesses under financial pressure have to.
You wait for the Welsh Assembly version. Good luck!

This scheme looks very much like the last one, which was almost a carbon copy of the Welsh 'Small Business Grant', which I did claim on. It really couldn't have been made any simpler, far simpler than the 'getting 3 quotes, make up a story' nonsense that normally goes on.

I really don't see how it could be made simpler, or require less admin, than what they are doing now, whilst still providing accountability for what is spending public money.

I am looking forward to the Welsh Assembly version, but I doubt it will be imminent as ours will still be coming as SFP as they've opted to wait and watch the chaos of ELMS unfurl over the border. :censored:
When/if it does come, I won't be rushing to spend money on something that doesn't make business sense, but I may look at it as it will change the cost/benefit ratio of a few choices I may be looking at already. I do hope it doesn't make for the wingefest that this thread appears to be...

Janet I see you’ve got a sward lifter for grassland but no corresponding low disturbance subsoiler (basically the same thing) for arable which are becoming increasingly popular as people are recognising soil health; I’ve been quoted 12-16000 for a 3m arable unit; will there be anything in further rounds to cover this or do you envisage the sward lifter money to be used for both arable and grassland types? Thanks
Have a look at the earth panbuster

Good to see that ram pumps are represented again and the update to the specification

IIRC you purchased a direct drill under the last Welsh SBG.

How did the figures compare to these? Did you manage to achieve 40% funding on the price paid?

It costs the same to administer a small claim as it does a bigger one. If you could claim even smaller amounts, the admin costs would increase dramatically as a proportion of the pot.
if there were no minimum It would put a good non basic stick reader option to all for £400 instead of £700 . admin cost/time of a photo of it looked at and a few boxes ticked 5 mins max .

Erth drill looks best deal so far as i can see atm.

Yes, I received around the 40%, but it wouldn't have been if I'd opted for a higher spec drill, or bought it after the prices started jumping. I could also have bought a lower spec drill from the same manufacturer (as many did), which still met the required spec for the grant and received much more than 40% at the time.
As it was 5 years ago, the actual figures aren't really relevant to prices quoted today though.

Looking through the prices used for valuation for this particular scheme, and knowing what the current prices are on a few of those items, DEFRA certainly look to be a year or two out of date. But then, government policy appears to be to deny/downplay inflation, which we all know is running well above official figures...

Edit: I should say that I also sold my existing DD on, effectively banking the grant money into a newer machine, rather than buying something I didn't need and couldn't justify. At the time, I was split between doing that, or doing the same to upgrade my folding rolls or a min-til cultivator. There was nothing on the list that I needed, but I wasn't going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Janet, If we wanted to make a claim for FETF51 Yield Monitoring, would something like the FarmTRX system be eligible if we bought a cheap tablet to be the 'in cab display', as they system doesn't have its own display, it uses a mobile app to display the data?

With COP26 recently and Government targets blar blar blar why isn't Green technology, Methane hydrogen or electric items ,Carbon capture or Calculators etc etc that farmers are being encouraged to use NOT on the items qualifying lists????
STRANGE.
Quite agree. Have been sat on a biomass alternative for diesel for over a decade now it would be good to get DEFRA to recognise farmers can provide alternatives to fossil fuels given the right support.

40% under the Small Business Grant scheme, which was matched by an English scheme a couple of months after. ;)

The Welsh scheme stated that the items couldn't be used for contracting, not that it was policeable. I didn't see that stipulation in the English scheme.
The previous Countryside Productivity Small Grant Scheme was not applicable to contractors

Lots of grassland subsoilers can also be used for arable. He-va stealth ticks all the requirements in the scheme

It’s all just a big joke, the shear amount you need to spend to get in for the minimum of 2k of grant is ridiculous. I’ve said it before. There is absolutely no help in these grants for the small farmers to help them level up in any such way.
yep I very quickly came to that conclusion, I could put together enough for a grant with stuff like handling equipment but it wouldn't pay me back
best I can hope for is that some of the big boys may buy new with the grant and there may be some second hand about

Does it,, I am not sure that is necessarily true. Employed humans have an infinite ability to expand work to fill the hours for which they are employed.. Achieving more work does not necessary require more time or come at an increased cost. The process for approving smaller claims could be far simpler and streamlined compared to the extra checks required for the approval of larger complex claims....

Hi Janet, one area that would be of benefit would be grants towards composting equipment to manage manures & waste by products into crop nutrition to meet tighter FYM & slurry application windows. Also if the industry is expected to move away from fossil fuels then we should be looking at generating our energy from own smaller renewable projects on farm (biodiesel & biomethane). I look forward to the processing & marketing grant encouraging opportunities for closer links between farmers & consumers.
The first thing I looked for in Annex 3 was a windrow compost turner, but nothing found
