As you said you haven't covered rental equivalent EitherNo
To be honest It would be far more profitable to let the local dairy farmers have the ground

That's taking land rent into account to?
Do try tooWhy not have you and others not done this before? £10/acre a year to keep topped up
So add 4-5 for plastic, 3 /ac, mowing, 2 for rowing up, 3 for baling, make that £20 a bale, rough figures and no carting ....
How are you mowing for £3 acre?
Not written very well but I took it that he ment £12 bale fert that was quoted + £3 + £2 + £3 per bale = £20He is only costing mower blades
I suppose not , but if you have a year on year supplier of straw then and hay then you want and need him to make a profit or he will stop supplying youWhats its cost to produce means bugger all to those thinking of buying it. They have their business to think of and want it as cheap as poss.
Agreed but if your buying at auctions and margins are tight your going to try and nick itI suppose not , but if you have a year on year supplier of straw then and hay then you want and need him to make a profit or he will stop supplying you
Which is another reason why less beef cows will be kept . A dairy bred weanling /store will eat half that and show the same profit marginIf you put fert on and get 8 bales an acre then at current Fert and talked about bale wrap prices if you cost the job like you were using contractors to do all the work then a roundbale this season of silage will be around £24 ish a bale excluding any grass keep/ rental value!
Suckler cow will eat what 10/12 bales a winter so £288 just in silage costs per cow alone!
2/4rds of the dairy calves i saw sold today will not cover their purchase/ rearing costs when killed as fat cattle let alone show a profit as the quality of these calves is so bad!Which is another reason why less beef cows will be kept . A dairy bred weanling /store will eat half that and show the same profit margin
Even if margins aren’t tight, I want all the inputs as low as I can get them! The wider the margin, the more for meAgreed but if your buying at auctions and margins are tight your going to try and nick it
Eh? Anything with Holstein in it will eat and eat and eat… I’d rather put the feed into a 3/4 beef bred. At least you will get some beef for the feed.Which is another reason why less beef cows will be kept . A dairy bred weanling /store will eat half that and show the same profit margin
Can we put your name down for the one off design place mats and coasters ?Even if margins aren’t tight, I want all the inputs as low as I can get them! The wider the margin, the more for me
Not those horrible wooden things from the other day?!Can we put your name down for the one off design place mats and coasters ?

perhaps dairy farmers ought to use better AI bulls, not the cheapest in the list.Eh? Anything with Holstein in it will eat and eat and eat… I’d rather put the feed into a 3/4 beef bred. At least you will get some beef for the feed.
Trouble is, and it’s got worse since sexed semen became so popular, the best dairy bulls aren’t good shaped animals. So they use lots of that semen too get the heifers and the 1 or 2 out of 10 that come bulls don’t really matter. I fully agree with you, but if I were a dairy man I can’t say I’d do much differently…perhaps dairy farmers ought to use better AI bulls, not the cheapest in the list.
What about these then .Not those horrible wooden things from the other day?!
