Nothing wrong with borrowing, Grandad says there is nothing better at focusing you too work than the bank manager breathing down your neck occasionally.
What I find hard too believe is some of the big outfits that owe £000,000’s don’t even own their farms? What have the bank secured against? Yes I know they can sell stock and kit but Kit can all be on lease and even at the moment stock doesn’t add up that fast?

I don't have exact figures obviously but fat bulls that were £1,300 to £1,400 then are £1,900 to £2,000 now.

Since 2008 and a lot of banks being caught out with over lending they’ve tightened things down a lot, most I know of now will only lend to 55-60% of asset worth so no idea how people can have a huge amount borrowed with no solid assets like land and property?

I hear this quote a fair bit makes me smile, if its true that attitude comes from hamsters on tread wheels getting absolutely no where...........
A few big dairy farmers have told me this, “up to £1m I was worried, up to £2m I was very worried. Now I’m not worried” when asked why the reply is “when you pass £5m the only person that is worried is the bank manager”

As long as the debt is steadily being paid off, those hamsters will eventually own their wheels though.
Or be able to borrow against the asset to buy a bigger, faster wheel if they wish.

I'm not sure the sh*TS hit the fan with b&b pigs or laying hen sheds.......? All the lads with b&b pigs are very happy with it one even told me last week the nxt batch of pigs they're going to pay him more & the layers seem even better..... They all putting more sheds up & admit the profits r bloody good, one told me it still totally eclipse's beef & sheepThe same sorts all dived into free range eggs a few years ago when that was the new “it” thing. Over supplied the free range market and it went tatered. Then they jump ship, rip kit worth £xxxxx out and full it with pigs. There’s 5% more pigs in the country than last year due too the sows not being exported too Germany so they got served and kept. This leads too over supply of pigs which in a normal year would make the job a bit rocky. Couple that with the sh!t storm that is covid causing hell at the processors and you get where we are now.
I wonder what they will fill those sheds with next?

One of Grandads very good friends was in a BIG way. All rented farm. He used too say “I’ve created a monster and there’s no easy way too stop it.” He retired, his sons took over. Set about being “the big I am” and within 2 years the bank folded them up. Both work for other folk now and old fella reckons it’s the best thing that could have happened. He reckons they’d have been in real trouble if it had carried on.
