Government: we’re skint and need to raise the national insurance contributions on the working man by 30%.

Also the government: Hey there boomer farmer that has had £1million in subsidies over the last 15 years and has just sold your farm for £5million. Have another £100k cause I heard you didn’t have enough capital to retire.

So as a Tenant Farmer if i retire with 100HA of entitlement. I then terminate my tenancy, which requires me to hand back the entitlements to the landlord. What evidence am i required to provide to you and how much will i be paid?

As I understand it, to participate in the scheme the tenant's entitlements will have to go to Defra to be cancelled. If it is a condition of the tenancy agreement that the tenant has to hand them to the landlord at the end of the tenancy, then the tenant will not be able to participate in this scheme.

Yes, but as I said it is unprecedented. It is the first time in human history (in the free world) that the food chain has been an oligopoly. Market share wasn't a thing until the 1970's.

So if the tenancy is over, what does it matter to break the terms?
Put your assets into the wifes name and tell the landlord to swivel

The scheme is a disgusting & immoral mess & i hope the press get hold of it soon and show it up for what it is @Janet Hughes Defra
I can see no logical reason for this ???
Press coverage of this will be 'slanted against ' the Ag industry . The last thing I want is the GP being drip fed more info that farmers are being given money for nothing which is the way it will come over..
I think the scheme is a joke and will probably only be taken up by those already intending to retire with no-one to take over the reigns . The big point was made very clear by @silverfox quite early on in these pages .....you don't have to sign up .....it purely voluntary !
We looked at it last night in detail,my OH and me , and decided it wasn't worth doing . In 5 yrs time we may,or may not, regret it but that's our choice .

''being given money for nothing'' is exactly what this is all about---at a time when the taxpayer is being hit with increased NI etc etc

If the ag. industry/representatives had any moral compass at all they would be calling this out ----
Do the NFU have a ''Head of Ethics'' that could look at this ?

I would have thought any 'Head of Ethics ' in the NFWho would be on overtime trying to sort out the 'ethics' within their own organisations .......after all why would they be concerned with anything in the farming industry.
They are probably cosying up with RT to see if they can come up with a 'retirement inspection' for any RT member who may choose to retire ! 😊😊

Give it with one hand and take away with the other.

Not sure what £100k is supposed to buy if you are a skint tenant.

A lot less buying power than two years ago and barely enough to buy just a new tractor, never mind a small rural property in your community with some meagre savings to go through retirement.

Average house price here is £290k.

Coupled with the value of farm machinery, stock, working capital, surrender payment, this may be enough to tempt many to quit the sector!

The above is the carrot, the stick is the reducing BPS in an already very marginal sector for many smaller farmers.

I would expect most or a lot of farmers would want to buy a small holding to retire to not give up completely , also some may have more than one farm
I don’t think the scheme is aimed at those with multiple farms or those staying in the industry.

I think that it is looking to incentivise those who are considering exiting to do this.
