Wheat is by far the weak link.Latest boring blackgrass news here;
15 acres of badly infested field inherited from last tenent.
3 years Italian, mowed for silage and hay, no seeding of blackgrass.
2 years of spring barley, min tilled, top 2 inches max. No blackgrass.
same technique 2 inch max min till, wheat in there now, full monty avadex and so on.
Mowing several acres out for silage as the wheat has been swamped by blackgrass
Same seed lot drilled later on other farms no problemsIs that right. I've known seed suppliers investigate failed germinations before. A complete field failing would be unusual in my view?
Just out of interest are you direct drilling. Iām old enough to remember the previous direct drilling fashion of the early 80s. Monsanto must have been giving away direct drills with a pallet of round up. Will be interesting to see if the plough makes a come back when RU gets banned.Wheat is by far the weak link.
We are barely keeping our heads above water with blackgrass if Iām being honest.
Yeh. We used to do cultivating or ripling as you would call it and rotational ploughing but it was worse.Just out of interest are you direct drilling. The roundup-plough argument is a boring one which is irrelevant and the majority on soils with any strength will be using some roundup whatever system they do.Just out of interest are you direct drilling. You may get 50% germination in that time...50% of what though...
We did that once, and I failed to notice that the BG immediately then threw up another seed head. So make sure you are ready to spray of or cultivate soon after you cut to avoid making the same mistake.Latest boring blackgrass news here;

Thats the trouble lots have faced in AB15We did that once, and I failed to notice that the BG immediately then threw up another seed head. So make sure you are ready to spray of or cultivate soon after you cut to avoid making the same mistake.
It may germinate 95% of the blackgrass in the seedbank. There's still a hell of a lot left. It will do something but you may find a spring crop just as useful.Iām not following at all. Just to clarify what I proposing is after harvest 22 we take our our bad grass weed fields and run a light disc press pass. It greens up and we spray off say end of September. Then go back in with the disc press and then spray off again early December. Then run the disc press again in early April then spray off. Then run the disc press again and spray off again say June. Then run disc press again and spray off again early September. Then maybe once more before seeding wheat in November.
I donāt understand how that will only germinate 50% As Iām doing far more than I would had it been cropped annually.
Iād be very careful leaving it two month between spraying. In warm weather Iād think it would throw out a head with seeds in less. Also going to lightly will only leave you a shallow depth of soil to play with once you resume normal practices on the field.Iām not following at all. Been there and got the T shirt, certainly no better imhoYou will be very disappointed

Only a small percentage will grow at a time. It looks like a lot. Itās not (if you have a big seed bank). Seeds cannot germinate in perpetuity.Can you explain why?

We don't have Black grass but have big issues with resistant Rye grass. We let some, that was in hybrid rye, go to a local dairy farmer for whole crop silage, he took another 2 cuts after. You could see, to the line, where they went last year.Spread some wheat, barley and oats on top. Disc &press it in. Roll. Let it grow then mow the whole lot. Swap it with a stock farmer for a pile of muck. Slop the muck in and plant with osr nice and early?
