Biodiversity offsetting - Anyone done it?

I know of one rough grass field that has been neglected for 30 odd years, occasionally seen sheep, suddenly this year It has beet in it, totally sterile seed bed..... and planning is going in next year. THat 20 acres will reqeuire sweet FA offset - infact as theirs hardly any hedges they could probably do 0.5ac within the site and have an offset ratio of 50 to 1....
That sort of thing needs publicity. You can't blame the land owner for doing it but it's a major unintended consequence of the mess that is currently proposed.

It needs to be close enough to a development to be part of the same "Biosphere" but at the same time needs to be far enough out not to encroach on future development chances.... so basically like a halo around the big cities.

Also - the offset is to replace , IE offset the loss of biodiversity in the development.
This is a massive (maybe intentional? ) weakness in the adopted system: the offset doesn't have to replace what's lost, only to deliver equivalent points under DEFRAs metric (which is very crude). Some sites are ecologically irreplaceable and need recognising for that.

The other Halo around big cities are bypasses and motorways which create a halo of smog... its all pure greenwashing dressed up...

It could get "interesting" as I intend to challenge the SoS on the issues raised in this thread ;) 💪

Can i ask you a pointed question on the day as to why AHA tenants with over 30yrs left to run on their contracts cant biodiversity offset without landlord permission? I love yachting too you see🤣

It is actually a one year tenancy that runs from year to year. You can walk away on 12
Months notice. You could not do that in a 30 year agreement. Moreover your landlord could serve you 12 months notice at any time. If you did not contest it (why wouldn’t you!?) within the framework of the AHA 86 then you would be out on your ear.

Out on my ear and onto my own land!! That yacht is still a distant possibility or a horse and caravan!!

Ha, poor turn of phrase on my part. I think the issue will be that the Landowner will always need to countersign the agreement in case you do walk away. I think the trig reforms will make it easier for tenants in that Landlord's will probably not be allowed to say no outright but there will still need to be some co-operation. I think the most recent reforms may make a nod to it but cannot remember exactly.

I have some mates from West Mercia Police available for riot duties subject to a free " farmer burger"? Since Covid Georgie Useless the " Cornish Farmer who works for Boris" has become less popular according to the polls with real growers and deliverers??
Where is the Labour guest at Groundswell??? Labour have traditionally looked after farmers since 1946 as we are the scum who tilth the land???

Your best riflemen and bowmen/women for the job are losing heart... Groundswell needs a balanced political view
