The herd I helped calve out this spring is pastured out where the fella lives. Owner knows this so asked if I would pop in and check them during harvest when they’re busy back at home and can’t make it out there as easily (be almost 2 hours away for them) Of course I said yes! So yesterday I went and took a stroll with them, waking them up from their morning siesta.

Calves are beasts. Found my two favourite heifers, they’re still knocking it out of the park.

Made me wonder if they recognized me or if I could drive in and wander through any herd and they’d stay that calm 😂

Possibly.

If you really "get" castle you can often get really close to them without them feeling at all anxious. Most of it is in your body language.

Surprising how many long term cattle keepers don't actually have that skill 🙄

I enjoy tucking through a herd and seeing how close I can get to them without them moving out of the way. It's like a game I play.

Geez. Wonder what company it was. Where I work our parent company is Australian. We have a section in the ERP for workplace violence but it's always more joked about than taken seriously that some unhinged person will show up.

I can see a little more emphasis on what to do in that kind of situation trickling down now.

You mean you want a view with nothing in it. 😂
Grassland ecosystems have more species diversity in a space the size of a parking lot than a similar size space in a tropical rainforest. There's lots in any view, it's just not massive organisms so you have to look to see it.

Which makes sense that men are focusing on large things like mountains and trees. To men, size matters

What's the saying, you can't see the forest for the trees? There's a reason there's not a saying like that in grasslands because here, as long as you look, you don't have big things blocking your view.

Saskatchewan's motto is "Land of the Living Skies". It's kind of mind boggling how many people will come out to the prairies and comment on the clouds, the stars, the Northern Lights, the colour of the sky... things they've never seen on such a scale where they're from because they live in trees or mountains (or a city with buildings and lights blocking things) Heck, there's even people on here who have commented on the sky when I post photos.

I'll revert back to this lovely quote 😂
