Coffey gone!

If the Government has a magic wand - i.e. sack Braverman, appoint Cameron and get him a life peerage, all within an hour or two, what a perfect opportunity today would have been to announce the formation of a new Government Department - the Department for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food

Headed up by a dedicated Minister, this would recreate a modern day MAFF and for us, show that A, F and F are to be supported for food security, employment in rural and coastal areas and also the environment - the latter coming hand in hand with 'the Countryside' and 'the Environment' which would get better almost on their own given thriving rural and coastal economies.

It could have been done - but no one's got the balls to start dismantling the complete lumbering giant that DEFRA has become

HK

Can't have that. The word 'Minister' would conjure up an air of responsibility. No one has that any longer- that's the whole reason they were downgraded to 'departments' in the first place- to limit political fallout in the event of scandal.

rarely do I comment on politics but I wasnt aware that defra was in for a change of minister , who was ? just glad its happened and its not gove though where is that as mrs 4 course puts it horrible man with a couple of expletives thrown in . I m presuming this new guy might have a few countrymen/ladies in his local constituency party who may be able to at least try and educate him about rural life and the worth to the country as a whole of its practitioners , problem is even if he turns out reasonably farmer friendly he aint going to have time to improve policies and sort out defra .

Strikes me as competent.

Its just what is seen as a result.

Sadly turning the countryside into the waste land around major cities., seems to be the objective.

If food production was the objective, he would be good.
Could be worse, they now need to backtrack on the way SFI is heading or else an awful lot of West Country MPs will be looking for another type of employment.

It could be their replacements who need to do that if they hope for more than one term ,reckon the current incumbents are as good as gone now without the hardcore rural vote

He is confrontational. I wouldnt be surprised if Sunak has put him there to slash the Agricultural budget and give it to another department like Health, where there are more votes. He probably thinks we can always import more rice and curry powder from India.

Tell me more about Barclay then?

My MP, ignored my entreaties to grow some balls and vote against lockdowns during covid.

Has actually shown some interest in problems we had with school admissions, although couldn’t/didn’t actually do anything.

I have heard from local councillors that he actually listens to them and does what he can, unlike say, Lucy Frazer in the next constituency over.

Might ping him an email and see if he wants a farm tour 😂

Pouring more money into the bottomless pit of the Health Service would not result in any more votes or MPs positions saved, there is still time to row back & put a basic payment for the first 100 hectares which could help save many rural MPs jobs & prevent a wipeout at the next election
