I dunno, had a drillman here 40yr, never managed to calibrate the drill on his own once. Also at spring sowing regularly moaned about the standard of the winter ploughing. Which he’d done. 🤦‍♂️
I had a man like that once, had to be retrained how to use most things every season. Expected me to know everything there was to know about every machine that he was the main operator of, yet constantly wanted a pay rise. Couldn't follow instructions (like "don't drive into that wet hole") to save his life. Would never take holiday yet complained of not having enough time off.

A successful employer/employee relationship is a two way thing - both have to give a bit to get a bit, or it just doesn't work.

I've had staff that I'd give the shirt off my back to, and I've had those I'm glad to see the back of.

this man would call about half a dozen times a day, things like “I think there’s a funny noise from the separator” where from, any bearing hot or belts slack? “Couldn’t tell you, I’ve not been out yet.” Drove me up the wall some days.

One harvest we moved field at about 7pm, he wasn’t happy, I said go home, I’ll take the combine, he didnt want that either, seemed t want everyone to stop and call it a day. Not long started in new bit and he’s on the phone cursing and swearing that the headers not working right “this is no feckin use” etc etc. went back up to see what problem was and the dozy tit had hooked up the header but not connected any pipes or plugs, bulldozed his way half round the headland, broken a heap of sections and fingers, filled the stop trap, concave full of earth. “So that pr*ck on the tractor hasn’t put the pipes in” 🙄.

Was always someone elses fault. I made a rod for my back by facilitating it when I first came home thinking if he’s happy, it easier for everyone. in hindsight, was a mistake, pee'd off a few good men as well, they saw it as preferential treatment when I was trying to put him places of least resistance/hassle/interference away from the rest of us as he was like a handbrake being applied one click at a time to a job.

On the flip size of this though our calf girl appeared in the yard one day with her dad asking for a job. She was 16 and about to start ag college but had zero experience.
anyway we took her on, on a trial basis. Fast forward 6 years she’s still here, calf’s are amazing, she would be the most reliable person to ring with any questions on calf and cow health and knows every animal she has reared since she started by sight. She’s a pleasure to manage, and very reliable, not once let us down due to sickness or inhealth, and to top it off her attention to detail is second to none.

That’s the thing, a good attitude goes a long way. On both sides. Can train for new skills, can’t change a bad attitude.

Worked for some some proper wallys in the past, one lad so narrow minded that he called his full timers in to watch me fill a grease gun out of a bucket whilst he made witty comments. A previous employer got us to oil the outside of the barrel so the grease didn’t stick, bozzer had never seen such witchcraft so he stood and ripped the pee. Even after he was proved wrong he kept going on about me “lubing my shaft” or some shite. Looking back he was probably quite insecure, belittling students made him powerful. 🙄
 
Staff management, interaction , communication is a bit like being a good stockmen , it’s a skill that you have or haven’t got,it can’t be taught.
Sadly some employers,managers are so arrogant that sometimes it’s not the staff who are alll useless, it’s the employers management who are the problem but so up tmemselves they can’t see it
That sounds a bit like my previous employment, back in 1990-92!!!

That kind of thing would do my nut. I'd expect a grown man with even a modicum of experience to know how to run and operate stuff themselves. Fudge ringing up folk all the time, I couldn't be doing with that.

That being said, I couldn't do with the opposite either: you've a hard full of experienced blokes and each one has to be set working like a wind-up toy each morning where you start the day with pointless chats about who got what done yesterday. Would drive me insane. One of the bosses where I once worked would leave lists for us and we'd do the work best pace and best order whether we saw him that day or not. He could have just left a list for an entire week right in the middle harvest and disappeared and the work would have been done- the foreman had a game plan in his head, dry day or wet day and knew roughly how long it would take to do X in field Y. Oh and we've got 4 wagons coming Wednesday morning etc. Letting some adults use their initiative and get on and do what they knew how to do.

She is hungry to learn. This year we’ve put her though an ATV course, chainsaw, vet med, rat bait and animal transport. For next year she’s thinking about doing her class 2 and helping us out on the tippers when short on that side of the Buisness.
i dont really want to loose her from doing the claves but id rather pay for the training and have her happy and doing several days a week on the calves than none at all.

The class two would be more of a hefty cost so would need to sit down and say look if you want to go down this route that’s fine but we will need to sign a contract that you won’t have a pay rise for the next 2 years say and if you leave in that two year period you owe me the course fee. If people are willing to learn I’m willing to teach / get them taught. Even if she only ends up running lorry’s in for MOT’s / 6 weekly’s on the weekend it saves me a job!

What we usually say is if they leave inside a year they repay the course fee, leave between a year and two pay half. We pay for their time training.
If it's something we need or want them to train in them we pay all costs.
I wouldn't freeze pay, though it's worth highlighting your investment in them and appreciation come negotiation/appraisal time.
People that want to learn are a pleasure to teach/get taught/have on the team
