Thriplow Annual Report

I was fortunate to have been taken at the age of 9 or 10, by my father who worked for Claas, to see the Apollo grass drier in action at Thriplow. Complete with the Ford 8600 hitched to a Taarup forager with disc direct cut head cutting Lucerne. The Ford 3000 and Colman forage box were being filled with the dry Lucerne wafers.
It was about that time that I decided that a life in farming was for me. Amazing how vividly I remember that trip.

I’ve just googled what a Claas Apollo is.
Absolutely mental! Never seen one before.

Some very good wheat and barley yied averages there David.

Sad job for us all (me included) when £500/ha Stewardship options look more attractive than growing crops.

A bit more on this. Dad is still around at the age of nearly 95 and fully compus mentis. I see my parents most days. I mentioned this thread to him today and he remembered the day the Apollo was delivered from Kings Lynn docks. There was no ramp at Thriplow Farms so Oliver arrived with a Drott and dug a hole.
That Apollo was the only one ever sold in the UK but Dad did have a friend near Dereham in Norfolk who had a Taarup version.

The mid ‘70’s fuel crisis killed the whole idea off.

What I should have said was that it limited growth of grass drying. Of course some of the commercial dryers were able to keep going, often selling in to the horse sector or by other added value means.
The Apollo was aimed at farmers for home consumption.

Maybe it was silage what killed the demand.A change in cow diet with the increased cost of grass nuts. My aunt's family still dry grass/Lucerne but it's aimed at horses and another in Lincolnshire dries it to extract chlorophyll.
