If you look on the shooting forums you will find umpteen dedicated fox shooters. Find one near you, they know what bait to use, and it shouldn't take them very long to sort out the problem. A fox to them is a challenge and don't mind spending nights waiting.
You have a cage, so contacting one of the fox boys is still a must to dispatch of it legally, with a suitable gun.

Same method as dispatching squirals without a gun, drown it. Once its in a cage dump it under water. Obviously as its a fox you will need to pick it on on forks and push it into a pond/similar.(y)

I'm only interested in a humane dispatch. Otherwise I would have built an illegal spring trap.

I know plenty of shooters, and am already on shooting forums, the only reason I lack a suitable firearm is because of where I live, so I only have air rifles.

The shooters I know are happy to come and shoot it once a pattern arises, or if I can cage trap it.

They would shoot it snared, but personally I'm not happy to leave it snared that long, I'd want it dispatched ASAP rather than it panicking for an extra few hours for a someone else to turn up and shoot it.

We snare many foxes a year here, much to the hunt's dismay. A rifle/shotgun with BB's is really the only answer for a quick dispatch. They fair thrash around once caught. Cage traps although sounding fine in principle never seem to work here, gave up years ago on them. Hope you catch your Mr Reynard!!!

How about a humane death, as any sentient being deserves, some ridiculous comments on here (n)
Damn right, if I had any of you in my cellar tied to a chair, and it was plainly obvious I was about to murder you, what would you rather? The fence post / shovel/ hammer round the head several times? Drag you up to the yard and run you over with the tractor? Drown you in a bucket? Or just a shot to the head with a gun?

I have had another visit from a fox, in the last week or so I've now lost 2x turkeys, several chickens and rather irritatingly one of my geese.

I do not have a shotgun. If I snare it, is it legal to crack it's head with a shovel, or slit its throat (if I can get close enough!)?
Get it gone quickly but for feck sake don't post what you done on a public forum as that would be so STUPID!!!!!

Yes quite and well said.

Remember that we are representing an industry in a country obsessed with animal welfare and the least we can do is show that we are both professional and aware of our responsibilities as farmers and producers.

This is a public forum and anyone can read these posts, so for gods sake engage your brain before posting. There are people who are anti our industry who could use certain posts to promote their anti-farming causes. Not good PR.

I would have thought a swift clout on the back of the head would be far more humane that waiting for somebody to come to shoot it
I don't have a gun n thus have no experience of shooting an animal myself.
I have whoever knocked plenty of things on the back of the head with no problems.
