We've decided not to bother with the spring cropping. Anything we didn't plant in the autumn, which is a lot, will be fallowed. Just not worth the effort at these prices.

No, totally fallow in the hope of clean ground come September. Will be sprayed off and hopefully seed bed prepared for early drilling.
I do have a bit of wheat in that looks well so far.
Some peas and potatoes to go in.
Have just finished ploughing to get rid of combine wheelings on the bodied land.
I'm planning on a bit of draining, dyke clearing, woods tidying, building and machinery maintenance to keep me busy.
Still have crop to sell if the price ever picks up

I have rent to pay but figure it'll be it'll be a lesser of two evils if the drought effects late drilled ww or spring barley that nobody wants....as i say I'm just going with my instinct...no doubt I'll get it wrong again

we have rent on some and no rent on some. may look into sfi on some of it although really waiting for 2024 sfi when they get combined and will use ab6 instead of osr. quite sad really on a quite productive farm.

Yes very true. Am not right in thinking that you receive higher grain and straw prices to somewhat balance this out? Or is this all lost by more expensive fert/other inputs?

£340 osr.
We don’t get more for grain and straw to balance this out , we get more because we have to import most of the grain we use and that comes at a higher price compared to England where you are exporting most years. We are around £30/tonne above u atm depending on location
I know its a free market, i just meant that the higher prices are maybe better than SFI.
The way costs have been rising in the last few years,and the weather not being great it’s getting more difficult to make a decent profit for the effort put in !
