They put forward a 3 year scheme. I’m not for protesting for protest sake but if they try to change it on the fly I will be parking machines on the M6 until they honour the scheme as was issued.

Grossly unfair to change agreements already made.
It would be equally grossly unfair to not give access to the same agreement for anyone else.

Politics aside what does the scheme actually say ?

Can they claw back/ reduce rates of a scheme already signed up to - in years 2 and 3 because they have screwed up ??

The commercial naivety of the entire scheme and lack of accountability for expense of public money and value for the taxpayer is beyond belief IMO.
All that talk about paying for intentions rather than targets achieved said it all.
Nobody has any idea whether we will see any real long term carbon sequestration after all these payments for example, and at what cost to food supply security etc.
If they’d just kept BPS and stewardship on merit then it would have been fine.
So now we are heading towards blowing the entire budget on a non production gold rush leaving those who try to carry on food production going bust because they are competing with subsidised imports produced on a low cost base.
Well done. What a complete balls up. They’ve drifted into this with no clue about the end goal.

Doesn’t DEFRA realise that most big corporate farming firms have specialists optimising returns who will have absolutely no qualms about milking the system for all its worth. They aren’t charities or philanthropists who will reduce their uptake of options for altruistic reasons. It will simply come down to the bottom line with those folk and if it means an entire estate going into a scheme then it will. Stable doors starting to be swung shut as we wrote but you can see the hoof marks down the road.

They’ve carte Blanche to do as they like with rates as far as I can see. Nowhere does it say rates are guaranteed. Expect to see “visits” become “inquisitions” as the budget gets tighter.

It’s an ever expanding “big state” spending money like water on uncertain outcomes with unpredictable and unintended consequences.
I don’t know whether to fill my boots like all my neighbours are doing or carry on living by my own wits. I still reckon I could do as well without schemes with careful farming and still benefit the environment. But I’ve other partners involved.

Iirc on the paperwork/online, their side of the contract allowed for changes at will. This has been highlighted in past threads. (I'm sure @JP1 mentioned it before?) (Probably @Goweresque too👍)

But if they go down this road, then what little trust is there.....Will completely evaporate!

Edit. Just to add, we haven't, and weren't intending, to sign up.

Exactly , why bother with this sh!t if that's what's going to happen ,

The implementers will be out of office and into the Lords or knighted or promoted to some prominent role to look down over us before the "crop" is out the ground ....

The irony is that if they hard cap SFI (ie no one can claim more than £X) they'll have the NT & RSPB et al screaming blue murder, so every cloud has a silver lining!

I've been wondering a while how the sums added up. I calculated I could more than double my BPS by stopping all food production on my farm and just putting the lot into various SFI options. If I can do that so can everyone else. So given we all got £90/acre before, there's not enough money for us all to get double. The sums only add up if loads of people claim nothing or significantly less than they used to, or the payments are capped in some way.

It sounds like the penny is dropping, and the new message will be - keep working peasants, we need the food so don't think you can just sit back and collect the eco-payments and do nothing. My guess is they will quite rapidly cap SFI payments at a level of £X per acre farmed, where X is less than the old BPS rate. This allows the big boys to claim more than the little ones, so they don't cut up rough, but caps the budget at less than BPS was.
