It's true in some of the picture house towns & villages by the sea it's a real problem for locals but in the UK as a whole the percentage of second homes in comparison to the amount of new house building is minuscule, there is but one reason for the housing shortage in the UK & probably the same applies to much of Europe.

you love stats. When I was at school, I can only remember in my whole school years, a kid from a broken home. Ie, most houses housed a couple. So, compared to incomes , how many houses are tied up by single parent homes ?

I have a feeling this talk of second homes being the problem is some what of a red herring, it's true because of stupid government policies many people that previously let property now prefer the safety of air b&b rather than get stuck with a nightmare tenant that the government have made almost impossible to get rid of even if the amount of weeks let is only a quarter of the time let previously.
Forget all the bullish!t you cannot allow our population to increase so dramatically without it causing a housing shortage!
English taxpayers own just under half a million second homes in the UK mostly for holiday use.

Holiday use only or partly air b&b or a buy to let investment,

Make it far easier to evict troublesome tenants & recoup lost rent & the number of long term lets would increase dramatically, many former landlords have given up & sold their properties creating a shortage of property to let.

Can't see anything showing turnout percentage. If Tories are losing seats off the back of 60% plus turnout there's cause for concern. Otherwise it's all to play for and Starmer still has a long way to go to get his massive majority.

Yeah, not surprisingly media concentrating on percentage vote with little mention of turnout or actual voting numbers.

When you do manage to dig them out, yes it's a pasting for the Tories (unsurprisingly) but hardly a ringing endorsement for Labour either, their total vote is actually down.

"A plague on all their houses" still seems to be the overwhelming message from the electorate.

Yes, but ironically Sunak might take comfort from that.

People who vote independent at a by-election might think twice when there's a government to form at a General Election.

However, he's getting all these signals that he needs to do things differently, and he isn't!

So the people are entirely and completely pizzd off with the incompetent, corrupt, inept, Brexit Tory government. And so they should. They express their dissatisfaction in spades in local and council elections.
But there’s a theory, that they might not follow through on that in a GE, and the same inept, corrupt cabal could possibly march back into government, especially on the back of the dumb, anti democratic FPTP system.
Seems like the Brits do like to kneecap themselves when it comes to the bigger questions in life…

Their greatest hope is some kind of amnesia....
