Beef / Lamb & Pig Price Tracker

When I'm dealing with all the dead stuff my mind keeps going back to I think it was a Hannah Hauxwell book ....'too long a winter'
It’s not just the length of the winter, it’s how wet it is. Ten years ago cows would be out into November and back out again in April. This year they’ve been in since October and won’t be out until well in to May if lucky. It’s getting to be nearly 8 months of winter, can’t spread muck, grass slow to get going, let’s hope this is a one off and not going to be the norm going forward

I put Macs on as many young lambs as I could yesterday and it seems to have protected them. Have some mules lambing to a Cheviot and it hasn’t bothered them without macs! Fortunately nothing born until first light and brought them in, all ok
Macs have been a big saviour here especially after finding new supplier they actual stay on for a while !! until lamb strengthens and grows out of them.Sold some own hoggs last week for £180 so a 30p mac is excellent value.

I know some say April can be crap but I reckon we had some good dry lambing times for most of the last 10 years up until last year
I would agree. We only started lambing outside about 10 years ago and could not really remember a real bad night until last year when we had a couple of wet nights.

This year has been awful, mainly due here to the fact the ground was waterlogged before we started. If this was to become the new norm we would have some thinking to do.

Which type of Cheviot? Maybe the big Park type?
Lairg type would be hardiest. True Northie due to size seem to have a slower birth, so a bit slower to get their first feed.
Only experience with border type left me disappointed with them. Not great mothers.

Don't matter the breed, weather will take out a few unless sheltered and well fed.

Have had 3 ewes leave a lamb, and had a few needing warming and care.

Anyone wanting pets?

To be fair we have 5 pets, 3 that were lost from their mother and a pair that at 2 days old were banded and marked, the mother took abandoned them.
