It’s not just the length of the winter, it’s how wet it is. Ten years ago cows would be out into November and back out again in April. This year they’ve been in since October and won’t be out until well in to May if lucky. It’s getting to be nearly 8 months of winter, can’t spread muck, grass slow to get going, let’s hope this is a one off and not going to be the norm going forwardWhen I'm dealing with all the dead stuff my mind keeps going back to I think it was a Hannah Hauxwell book ....'too long a winter'
Cleared out about 10 am but just had a horizontal sleet shower now, just as I got up to the top of a banking it was starvation. Good job I started lambing with to many sheep as I will be down to normal if this carries onSnowing fairly hard now like
Macs have been a big saviour here especially after finding new supplier they actual stay on for a while !! until lamb strengthens and grows out of them.Sold some own hoggs last week for £180 so a 30p mac is excellent value.I put Macs on as many young lambs as I could yesterday and it seems to have protected them. Have some mules lambing to a Cheviot and it hasn’t bothered them without macs! Fortunately nothing born until first light and brought them in, all ok
We haven't sold at those prices so can't afford a MacMacs have been a big saviour here especially after finding new supplier they actual stay on for a while !! until lamb strengthens and grows out of them.Sold some own hoggs last week for £180 so a 30p mac is excellent value.
I would agree. We only started lambing outside about 10 years ago and could not really remember a real bad night until last year when we had a couple of wet nights.I know some say April can be crap but I reckon we had some good dry lambing times for most of the last 10 years up until last year
I was think this morning that good job we had a big scan because we haven’t half lost a lot of lambs and ewes lately. Got 240 on feeders now because of ewe deaths, lost nothing in the run upto to lambing.Good job I started lambing with to many sheep as I will be down to normal if this carries on
Mine was 1991 and ok then , last shed they have quoted and just ridiculous to be honest …Iv got one, was value for money at the time. 2020 but they were way out when i did this calf shed
Dry yes , good for man but here they have been far to dry ! Nothing grew and were way to cold .I know some say April can be crap but I reckon we had some good dry lambing times for most of the last 10 years up until last year
Tomorrow is shyt here as well as today .Looks a lot better for us after today, let's hope!
Which type of Cheviot? Maybe the big Park type?I put Macs on as many young lambs as I could yesterday and it seems to have protected them. Have some mules lambing to a Cheviot and it hasn’t bothered them without macs! Fortunately nothing born until first light and brought them in, all ok
Lairg type would be hardiest. True Northie due to size seem to have a slower birth, so a bit slower to get their first feed.Which type of Cheviot? Maybe the big Park type?
