The MMB had various farmers sitting on various committees representing their area or region. I got to know the names rather than their farms back then.
Roll on 20/30 years, I've had the opportunity of visiting many of these farms. The above comments by @ollie989898 are so true. Very much an eye opener, and TBH can't think of 1 which even nearly impressed me. That is cattle, calves, infrastructure, and buildings.
Most needed bulldozing, and am certain those who held these representatives in high regard, would be shocked at what was down the farm drive

I can't really say I have ever paid much attention to any of the personalities/movers + shakers in the industry, as I never really read the press that much to notice any particular names or businesses. Which is possibly why the old chap saying what he did surprised me as it did.

I do remember a college lecturer once saying to me you can often judge a farm by the state of it's young-stock and over time I began to realise how true that can be.

In fairness, most of the people we work with do seem to care about doing a good job.

AI tech, most all the vet team, contractors, agronomist...

Maybe we are lucky.

However, often, the larger and more corporate the company, the harder it seems to be to find that care and keep staff motivated.

People forget stuff it’s human nature but if you want to run multiple units you need eyes and ears everywhere and in today’s modern world there’s no excuse. Calves have been bedded and there’s cake in the feed trough for them. If I roll the footage back I’m sure I’ll see someone feeding them there milk. There’s literally no excuse anymore

Them as can,do. Them as cant teach. or some such was what we were always told.

They don't need to give a feck they just need to do what they're told and follow procedure set by management. It's then managements job to ensure standards are met and fix it if they are not. The problem with some of these businesses is that the management don't know what they are doing either.
Not a problem that's unique to Ag.

Very few people are "man" managers. Farmers are no different. Most of the ones I know, I'd never choose to work for them.
Staff management is 100x more difficult than managing cows.

Yeah I meant in general but our vets went on furlough in a rotation system

We don’t really use them that much but I had different vets ringing to see if we wanted routine visits during lockdown cause normal one was on furlough

Ours furloughed the two vets at high risk, cause some dick head client's on the small animal side would turn up ill quite often
